what is the deal?????????? it would seem that the 256mb card is better??? is this really the case?
i got smoked by a 256mb 8600m gs. and i also noticed that the clocks on the 256 are considerably higher.
hummmm
any thoughts on this would be welcomed
-
are you sure that it wasn't a gt? or the 256 gs just oc'ed?
-
That's a 78 point difference...out of 3000.
-
-
The clocks are weird for both systems.
Stock - 600 Core / 700 Memory
256 Mb - 680/750 understandable slight overclock.
512 Mb (Yours) - 675/450 ??? Huge memory downclock. -
stock clock 500/400
over clock 675/450 -
You computer must come with a downclocked card since the stock clock for an 8600m GS is 600/700. http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8600M.html
-
i looked at all of that, but it applies to the 256x256 = 511 or 512mb 8600m gs
-
-
and that's what im wondering. if i had the true clocks, i would be in first....
trying to get to the bottom of this now. my 8600m gs has ddr2 memory -
What program are you using to look at the clock speeds and overclock the GPU?
-
gpu -z
n-tune
rivatuner 2.08 -
-
yep!
im catching that first place mark now.
i got a 3dmark06 v 1.10 score of 3111 -
so no one else has the same memory and shader clock?
geforce 512mb (dedicated & not shared) 8600m gs 500/400/100 = gpu/memory/shader
nvidia has it at 600/700/1200 = gpu/memory/shader or so they say, but no real definite answer anywhere. this would seem to be for the 256 + 256 shared memory version of this card -
geforce 512mb 8600m gs 500/400/100
what is the next step?
Why a downcloked card?
I'm puzzled too.. -
-
Power saving?
-
power saving?? -
downclocked for power saving is what he meant
-
hummmm...makes perfect sense.......but ummm....I DONT LIKE IT! *LOL*
considering that was one of the buying features.
remember, i over clocked my card and i still couldn't out perform the 256mb card..... -
Memory doesn't matter for the card anyway. 512 Mb is overkill for the 8600m GS, underclocked or not.
-
very true indeed! since it only has 16 unified and a 128 bit bus -
I talk to a HP tech supervisor and they said they underclock the
card with their driver.... and it's in specs they said..
by the way the gpu-z read on mine is 0 and mem 0 now and crash..
and n-tune report nothing for clocks..!?
wierd. -
you'll probabaly have to reinstall the driver then.
and i figured as much. (hp underclocking) they should have at least left the card the same as the 256mb version. -
I'm in the same boat as well.
I have a DV9500CTO with the 512 8600M GS and according to nTune from
nVidia, I have the same 500/400 numbers. I am going to try a driver from
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers to see if I can improve things.
-
or 169.09 -
Is nTune better than rivatuner for OC'ing? compatibility wise i mean. nTune looks so much simpler
-
Downloading the 169.04 now.
I'll post the results. -
nTune sucks.
It dangles a carrot that you can't bite.
While it looks like you can overclock, that is a joke because the
settings always revert back. I used it only to get the clock numbers. -
vista ntune is like for beginners and rivatuner is the advanced version for vista.
apparently you get more things to do in the xp version of ntune. gonna have to check that out. -
Well, 169.04 wasn't any good if the blue screen of death is any indication.
I haven't seen that screen since Windows 98.
Good thing I have a backup DV6500 and that I haven't mirrored my oc
efforts on that one yet.
I'll try safemode to recover my DV9500....
I'll then try that other driver version.
Once I have one working, will RivaTuner work??
So far it hasn't with stock HP drivers. -
-
I made it a point to click on the left side of the page for Vista 64 bit.
My downloaded file is confirmed to be Vista 64 bit.
Since I am not sure if my blue screen was the driver or the result
of installing Riva Tuner or nTune, I'm going to restore the system
using Acronis and start over from a point before all of this OC interest. -
and it's not rivatuner or nvidia...unless you overclocked to high.
the highest i could get out of it was 675/460/1500 -
The funny thing is I haven't oc'd anything yet.
I am still trying to secure a reliable means of doing so, hence my install
of RivaTuner but all of the options were greyed out, save the advanced
menue that I was not going into.
So it must have been the driver version of 169.04
I am back in Windows, with 169.04, I'll try a series of reboots
to see if it blue screens again. -
then that driver might not be working for you.... all options should be open
-
I suspected as much.
I'll try the other driver you suggested. -
this stuff seems to be random on working....
-
What driver are YOU using since you have 5.9 & 5.4 reported by Vista
-
Well, I rebooted a number of times with driver 169.04 and no problems.
I try to run RivaTuner and I get a "digital driver" warning. I let RivaTuner
try to disable digital driver signing and reboot. My blue screen is back.
Now that I recall, this happened before the first blue screen. I restart
and Vista loads normal, once in Windows it informs me that Vista has recovered from an error. I try to run RivaTuner and again, can not load
Riva Tuner 64.sys driver and would I like Riva Tuner to disable driver signing.
Conclusion: Riva Tuner isn't 64 bit compatible despite its claim to be.
Does anyone have a utility or method to oc the 8600M GS that is 64 bit
friendly?? -
im getting ready to change that again.
i cant get that 5.9 back for nothing in the world.
nor can i get back my 5.6 for cpu.
best i can get are 5.4's -
What is the best method of measuring the video cards performance?
-
i like 3dmark06. not sure which is the best
-
I ran 3DMark06 as the trial version. As it was testing, the FPS at the bottom
read off 3. I doubt I only have 3 frames per second. Thats why I want to try another one. -
lol
nah. means you have to reboot your computer -
I take it back.
I ran F.E.A.R. and had the game complete its own internal test.
My Minimum FPS 2
My Maximum FPS is 13
What the hell is wrong??? -
lol
nah. means you have to reboot your computer to reload the video driver. at least, that's what i have found out. then it works like it's suppose to.
you should at least be getting 12 frames or higher in the first 15 seconds -
