It looks like most of the new laptops coming out with Geforce Go graphics chipsets are coming with Vista installed. Because of this the laptop makers aren't providing the latest XP versions of Geforce Go drivers but they can be found. :D

Here is the latest graphics driver package from NVidia and it supports all of the Geforce Go chipsets. It was apparely released in the last couple of days. I have installed it on my Compaq F572US Laptop with the Go 6100 graphics chip. It works great. :D

    Enjoy!

The same thing for my F572US.

What we really need is the nForce 430/410 with integrated graphics driver because that's the chipset used in the laptop. Unfortunately that driver package is made only for Vista. NVidia has apparently never made an XP version. So instead we have to use two seperate drivers, nForce 430/410 with no integrated graphics and a Forceware graphics driver that supports all of the Go graphics chips.

I don't know why the driver thinks it's a 6100 but it may have something to do with the fact it is integraded into the nForce 430/410 package.

One more thing, i've just got my F577AU, the battery indication only shows the percentage, it don't show the remaining usage time. Does it happen to your F572US? I've haven't done the battery calibration yet, could it solve this problem?

Well, unfortunately thats supposed to be a feature. None of the current generation HP notebooks display the time remaining only the percent left.

Yes, they should. If it doesnt then just add the entries for your GPU or download/replace the inf file for the driver you want to install from lv2go.

Is it really necesary to install NVIDIA graphics driver? Won't the default graphics driver from Windows XP be good enough? Will default driver work?

Well, if you install Windows XP and can see everything on the screen during and completion of installing Windows XP, why bother installing NVIDIA driver? I am trying to understand what NVIDIA driver has to offer if you are able to install Windows XP and be able to view the images of the screen before installing NVIDIA drivers?

I always build desktops myself because I like to build computers according to my specifications instead of vendors making them against my specifications. When I install Windows XP and then install NVIDIA drivers, I usually don't see the benefits with NVIDIA drivers over Windows graphics drivers. Maybe because I am not a gamer and NVIDIA drivers might be beneficial over Windows default drivers for high speed games. With laptops, it's not so easy to build them like desktops.

My bottom line is I absolutely hate Windows Vista and I am trying to find modern laptops that I can install Windows XP at the least possible resistance. I currently own HP tx1000z laptop and found that many people have great difficulty installing Windows XP over Vista. I find this laptop a fantastic piece of hardware but I just hate Vista OS. So I put my laptop on E-bay mainly because Vista is incredibly slow, sucks and very difficult to transition to Windows XP. I am trying to find the latest laptop that is Windows XP friendly and I think DELL laptops might be the easiest to transition from Vista to Windows XP. DELL has good number of drivers available for Windows XP and HP only has a handful of drivers but they are useless because they don't include important drivers for Windows XP like WiFi, fingerprint readers, etc.

Do you have a suggestion of which modern laptop that is easy to convert from Vista to Windows XP?

The windows basic driver doesn't support 1280x800 resolution. It also does not take advantage of the hardware acceleration for all 2D and 3D graphic operations. It basically doesn't use ANY of the features that are contained in the graphic chipset.

You can actually SEE windows redraw using the windows standard video driver because it uses the CPU to do everything. If you have the appropriate video driver for your graphics chip most of that processing is done by the graphic chip and not the CPU.

    Think of it this way...

The windows basic VGA driver is like YOU pushing your car.

The graphics driver designed for your graphics chip is like putting gas in your car and using the engine to drive around.

A HUGE difference in speed and performance.

And as to what laptop to buy to use with XP? That's going to be a hard one because Microsoft is pushing all laptop makers to only offer Vista and completely phase out XP support. Because of that new model laptops are not going to have any XP drivers offered by the manufacturer. You will have to actually research the hardware and download drivers from older model laptops that have XP driver and use them. The drawback to that is you will not be able to upgrade the drivers to newer versions as they come out.

The only way to change this is if enough consumers complain to the laptop manufacturers about Vista and keep asking for XP instead but the likelihood of enough people doing that to make a difference is remote.

You make good points. But so many people are complaining about Vista and trying to revert back to Windows XP. That does not look good for Microsoft.

I was really hoping that Vista would be a revolutionary upgrade over Windows XP but myself and many others don't see that and don't even see it as an evolutionary upgrade. I see Vista more of a downgrade and am really disappointed in Microsoft. Look at so many complaints from hundreds of posts in this forum and I am not the only one.

I work for a fairly large company and our company absolutely refuse to upgrade our computers to Vista and I don't blame them.

What was Microsoft trying to do? The only three things I can think of are money, money and money. I don't care for their fancy Aero graphics (I turned them off because they were slowing down the system).

When Windows XP first came out, it was so good that it recognize every hardware I own including my Laser Printer I bought back in 1987. With Vista, it does not even recognize one single peripheral I own. I am not going to replace my old hardware that's been working so well just because Vista cannot work with them. That's pathetic. That's a small part of the reason I don't want Vista.

I would not be surprised that notebook vendors will soon supply complete list of every hardware drivers for their latest notebooks to support Windows XP in the very near future. I hope they won't let Microsoft strong arm them into sticking with only Vista.

Yeah I hear about Vista Service Pack 1 coming soon but I am skeptical and I don't think it's going to be much better than current Vista.

Sorry about the rant but had to vent. Pretty soon I will be laptop-less after it gets sold through e-bay. Thank you Microsoft for losing so much money for selling my first and only laptop I ever own.

The laptop manufacturers are going to tow the Microsoft Line unless they get enough complaints from their customers. As long as most people buying laptops act like sheep and don't complain to them about Vista nothing will change.

Fortunately there are some people like myself who have offered driver downloads for those who don't have the time or aren't tech savey enough to find them. And it IS a pain to find them. Most people would give up after looking for for a few minutes and not finding anything.

    I agree with you.

It would be nice if majority of notebook owners revert back to Windows XP and complain to Microsoft and notebook manufacturers that Vista are P.O.S. :p

Thank you for providing information about Windows XP drivers.
