    Dear All,

If any of you NX8220 users are experiencing the high pitch noise from the left-side of the machine while running on battery, then please report this to HP report, as this is a fault!

I have contacted HP support here in the UK, and they are investigating. They have not come across this problem before.

I've found that the workaround (please see other threads here) with regards to disabling power management for the specific USB Root Hub which powers the Bluetooth device (via Windows XP Control Panel), does indeed work. However this drains battery life by at least an hour or so...

    Regards,

    Rob

When I reported this issue to HP Canada's support, not only did they not hear of this issue, they didn't really offer any suggestions/options, well, other than exchanging/returning the unit. Well, it's on record, hopefully something actually gets done.

    Hi Mate,

My case has now been escalated to 2nd line HP Support, so I am waiting for them to get back to me.

How serious is the issue with the ide controller?

Is this setup seen on other (sonoma?) laptops?

I have been offered a Sony Vaio instead of my NX8220 - and am not sure what I should do?!

    Regards,

I hope something gets done about the high-pitched noise. It's good to see that it's going somewhere in the UK, here in Canada it's just sitting idle. I've sent my unit in for exchange, so hopefully I don't here the problem in the new unit (yeah, in my dreams!).

Regarding the IDE Controller, I guess it's not too big of a deal, but it is something of a concern. This seems to be the way HP has designed their new NX/NC product lines (maybe). I got a response from a user on their NC8230 and they have the exact same thing on theirs. Since the DVDRW is only a 2x-2.4x drive, it doesn't cause any actual buffer under run errors, but the write buffer is jumping all over the 5%-95% area throughout the burn on a 2.4x Sony DVD+R media.

Regarding the Sony, I'm not sure of the quality of the Sony notebooks. I have never used on before, but my cousin told me to stay away from Sony computers. He said that the overall quality was a bit lacking, but since I've never used them before, I can't be certain. Other than the high-pitched noise, you're not having any other problems are you? If not, you may want to stick with the HP since you're currently fairly happy with it. If you do go for the Sony and then you find out you don't like it, will you be able to switch back ot the HP or go for a different unit? If not, I'd definitely stick with the HP.

    Hi Mate,

Yes I agree - don't want to change my HP for a machine which turns out to be worse!

I have asked for a quote for replacement with an Acer 8104 WMLi Laptop - as this looks the only contender for me at the moment, if I do replace.

Anyone with any views/ experiences of the Acer? Has the Acer got the high-pitch noise problem (as we are seeing with the NX8220)?

    Cheers,

    Rob

Yepp, I have got the same problem. However, the noise desapears when I plug in a USB-module, such as a USB-memorystick. That is how I manage to live with this problem. Besides, I do not use my notebook on battery too much.

HP Sweden offered to exchange my unit for a new one but I don't have time for that. Also, they claim that it was the first time they heard of this problem, which I belive is a standard answer in support-world.

I belive this is a hardware issue and a "drive-upgrade-solution" will not apear. I love my nx8220 and I will keep on using a memorystick in order to avoide headache.

    Cheers

    Hello,

I have the same problem with my Acer aspire 7720G which is 2 days old.
It seems that when i turn on the bluetooth the high pitch noise goes away?
Does any one knows what is that. Why a new laptop can be so noisy. Does any one knows if that sounds is a hardware problem (which need replacement) or it is a driver problem which can be fixed by an update?

    Thank you
