I have been reading your posts regarding high pitch noise and your creative ways to avoid this sound. However, as a brand new owner of a nx8220 (1,86Ghz, 512Mb, 64MbX600, 60GB) i have a problem of a higher concern. I cant even hear the high pitch noise you guys are talking about because of the fan that in the first 5-10 minutes comes on and off during light task work such as browsing and then comes on and never goes off even if left idle for more than 30 minutes. I must say that this is not what I expect from a brand new modern sonoma computer. I want my computer to be quiet when for example just writing in word and a lappy with a decent battery-life (which decreases when fan constantly on). I should mention that the fan noise is less of a problem when running on battery.

Is this a normal behaviour for all of you nx8220/nc8230 owners or is there some kind of problem with my unit. I would very much appreciate any comments...

Otherwise the unit is wonderful with its clean design and overall impression as a quality product. But of course you guys knew that already...

Thanks in advance / Olle (Sweden)

    Dear Olle,

I had nx8220 notebook. The first had TFT problem, that was changed. So, I have had two pieces nx8220 :). All of them had this noise, the fans are running every time when the notebook is working. The situation is the same in battery mode than AC Power system, but several time that is working out. So, in my opinion this is a very strong machine, the processor is high (2 GHz, 2 MB cash)! Its must high refrigeration. Previously I had nx7010 notebook. That was very quiet but that was slower than 8220...
I have a problem with TFT panel, that is extraordinary concerning last one. NX7010 has clean scene. Seller sad: this is a new technology. OK, but that the old technology was nicer...

thank you gabika for sharing your nx8220 experiences!

Good news for NX8220 owners is that HP has a Bios fix in progress that will hopefully adjust the fan activity to a more decent level.

After having my NX8220 for a couple of days now, I have made the same observation regarding the fan. It was more difficult for me to notice the noise at first since it was so much quieter than my monstrosity of a desktop computer. I left it on last night and when I woke up this morning, I thought "Is that my laptop I hear? It's not that noisy, is it?" But really, I don't mind the noise of the fan while I am working. If a BIOS update is released for it to solve the problem, I will get it for sure, but I'd rather not have to deal with fan regulation software.

    Hi,
I have red about the patch, that should fix the high-pitch noise problem.
Does anyone tried it and can tell his experience, please?

    Is the problem fixed?

    Thanks a lot
    Nils

    Hi there

I also have an HP nx8220 but I don't hear any high pitch noise. However, I also always have the fan on, but this makes the system very cool. Just put your hand over an Acer or Toshiba Satellite and see the difference.

Is your fan running on a very low level, depending on the cooling power that is needed, or 100 per cent everytime?

Can you hear the fan, while running under low load?

What you recommend this NB or are there any disadvantages yet?

I still can't decide between the nx8220 and the Acer Travelmate 8101 :(

    Thanks.

    Olle,
The fan does seem to stay on all the time when connected via AC, but turns off while on battery (comes on once in a while to cool the unit).

If your fan is always on while connected to AC, you may want to check the BIOS to see if you have the "Fan Always on When on AC" option enabled. You may also want to check to see if your Power Management setting is set to Laptop/Notebook rather than Always On. Having it on Always On will push the CPU to run at full speed all the time. This would make require more cooling than if on Laptop/Notebook (runs at 800MHz, will increase automatically if more computing power needed).

You may even want to reload the OS and install noting but the basics (just required drivers). HP seems to install a lot of usless stuff in the system. This may put additional strain on the CPU and therefore require additional cooling.

    Nibu_de,
The high-pitched noise workaround does work. Bonkersrob and myself have reported this workaround and of course have tried it ourselves to get rid of the problem.

    Hi VB, Olle,
after using my mew nx8220 for almost a week, i noticed the same problem you have, with the fan: is running always on, when the lap is powered via AC.
Ok, i can survive with the noise ( a wisper comapred to my old desktop :) ), but i'm waiting , hopefully, for the new BIOS realise...

I'll try also this trick YOU guess:

Have you all trid this "RM Clock Utility":
    http://cpu.rightmark.org/download.shtml

You can use this to make your CPU's voltage lower which produce less heat.
It's useful on my friend's IBM X31 but I never tried it on Sonoma platform.
Maybe it is usful for you too.
