I owned an NX8220 but returned it becuase the lid would not close properly. Now I am considering buying it again. I was curious though about the DVD/ hardrive on same ide problem where the dvd was not burning properly as well as the buzzing noise?
Have either of these been resolved. What is your recomendation on repurchasing it? As well how long are your batteries lasting just surfing the net?
Thanks

I haven't heard of a problem about the HD and DVD being on the same IDE being a problem. Actually most laptops have only 1 IDE controller. Some may have SATA support but still on the same port. It's a common thing, I dont know where you heard this, but I think it may have been blown up. Like saying you can't play games on "shared memory", or you can't watch DVD's on a XGA screen.

The HDD & DVD drive are still on the same IDE Channel, as indiacted in one of my previous posts. This doesn't really cause a BIG problem when burning, but the buffer does tend to jump up and down during the burn process. I use Nero to beurn my disc and whenever I burn a DVD @ 2X, it jumps around from 99% to 47% and back up again throughout the burn. This hasn't caused any bad discs, but it's a bit disconcerting.
I'm not sure what the buzzing noise is, but there is a high-pitched whine/squeel from the left side of the notebook. This is caused when you disable/turn off the Bluetooth module. With it enabled, it's fine.
I'd recommend getting the unit again. I consider the high-pitched whine to be a minor inconvenience for the time being, and hope there will be a fix soon. But the issue with the IDE controller is non-resolvable as the unit was designed this way.
Battery life, I usually get approx 3+ hours depending on the LCD brightness level.

Madmike,
Most notebooks do actually have 2 IDE channels. It's just recently with the release of the Intel 955 chipsets and maybe some of the newer P4 chipsets has the support for 2 IDE channels have dropped. With the 955 chipset, it only supports 1 PATA IDE channel, but multiple SATA channels. HP just seemed to decide to release/design the unit with PATA support rather than SATA support.
Playing games on a unit with shared video memory will be a lot more difficult when trying to play very graphics intensive games like BF2, HL2 & Doom3. It might be possible to play, but probably with low graphics settings. Anybody that would play these games would probably want the high frame rates and added graphical features that might/is not possible with a notebook with shared video memory. Units with shared video memory is recommended for people that do no-to-light gaming, not hardcore gamers.

Well I ordered it again.
Last time I had the speckled display which I did not mind. It had even colour and backlighting. Something was shaking inside and the top lid did not snap closed and had an upward curve to it.
This time I get the perfect laptop but with a different display. It had no speckles and was much brighter. But it had very uneven colour. The bottom edge backlight was leaking in but in a sort of spiked mountain range pattern. then the side was also leaving in quite alot and the top had a glob which was very bight.
The edges were so bright you could see them through the XP blue. When it was a black screen it was just dreadful. Also had sort of uneaven lighting across the main area.
It was clearly a different manufacturer.
So this one went back and I doubt I will gamble for another one. I really dont get the quality control, you have to order a couple and take the bits that work from each. As well hp india is not easy to deal with. They kept asking me who I spoke to and all sorts of weird stuff. I am very unhappy with allthis.
Now I am out of luck and it seems my only option is a cluncky d810
