I have had my HP NX8220 for nearly 2 months and up until today I did not experience any significant problems with the system; however, when I opened up my notebook today, the LCD was flickering (like a TV with the vertical hold not set).

It was quite shocking and for a minute I thought that I had messed up my system, possibly by dropping my bag on the ground. But I did not recall ever dropping my notebook either in or out of my bag. I powered down to see if it would start up without the flickering problem the following try, but before it finished shutting down I pushed and released the button which turns the LCD off. When the screen came back on, it was back to normal.

Has anyone else had this problem with the display on their NX8820 or a similar model (NW8240, NC8230)?

Another minor problem I've noticed is a "blotch" near the upper right edge of the display. It is about 2mm in diameter and appears noticeably brighter than the surrounding region, but only on light backgrounds (i.e. white, yellow, light blue, etc.) I have checked my disply for dead pixels and none turned up. Any one else experience this with their display?

I've had the nx8220 for almost 2 months (1st one for 4 weeks, 2nd for 2-3 weeks) and I have not noticed this issue with my LCD (knock on wood). I did have an issue with the screen not returning after I hit the tab to turn the LCD off, but quickly found out it was a problem with the display drivers I used/setup. After correcting the problem, it seemed to work fine.

Initially when I read your problem, I thought it might have been a loose display cable, either behind the LCD or to the systemboard, but then I read you fixed it by hitting the switch. This is leading me to believe the LCD itself is failing. Adding the issue with the birght spot in the corner seems to support this. The LCD should be even all the way around without any color blotches. You may want to take the unit in for service and get a replacement LCD. Either that or possibly reload your display drivers (possibly try the ones from the ATI website & use the ATI Mod utility from www.DriverHeaven.net or the Omega Drivers from www.OmegaDrivers.net).

If the problem does happen again, before you hit the switch, try hooking up an external monitor and see if it happens there as well. If it does, then it's a problem with your video card, which would require a systemboard change.

Hello, I have the same trouble described by you - I had having it in less than 1 month after the aquiring it on the web. Unfortunately I cannot actually afford a support times - thus I just rather wait till I can suffer this disturbing problem.

My problem is very similar to yours, but till today I did never thought it would be a common trouble.

The flickering problem was a one time occurence. It has yet to happen to me again, although the problem with the blotch has become quite prevalent. I have described this in detail in another post.
