Well, thanks to people here I am very confident that this is the system I want and will fit my needs. The problem is I have been beating my head against a rock trying to find the model/build number for a system close enough to my needs.

All I want is a system with a WSXGA+ WVA (matte) display and a Lightscribe DVD. I can live with just about any CPU option though I would like at minimum a 100GB drive but would, at this point, be fine with only 80gb and would just buy something bigger to replace the drive.

But darned if I can locate any model numbers that include a Lightscribe drive. I even emailed Pre-Sales support a couple times and well, they just pointed me to the dv9000t which only comes with the way too reflective BrightView display. This despite explicitly stating I find the BrightView qite distracting and have no doubt it will never work given the wide variety of lighting conditions I work in.

Sooo, short question long....does anyone have a model number fitting the basic features I mentioned above?

I did finally locate this page which is a summary of the NX9420 options, few of which can be modified on any of the pre-config systems.

Basically I am finding the process of buying an HP system extremely frustrating and obsure process.

    Thanks for any feedback!

Strangely enough, my NX9420 looks to have a lightscribe drive in it, as well as came standard with the software. I have the RB529UT model btw...

I have been a slacker, and don't have any lightscribe discs, but I may be able to pick one up this weekend from a friend, and see if this really does burn lightscribe.

HAHAHA...ironic that your system does have a Lightscribe drive. ;) I did notice from the spec's link posted that HP must be trying to get rid of inventory of systems with the older CPU's as the CPU options in that link are all 1.8ghz or higher and all 667mhz FSB no 533mhz CPU's either. I am thinking maybe after New Years we might see some other/more pre-config options. I also noticed that on that page HP is spec'ing the NVIDIA card now and not the ATI card. I just think this might be an early sign that some changes are afoot...but WHY when I wanna buy...darn it!! :)

I know the Lightscribe drive is a minor detail for sure. The main reason I really want a Lightscribe is, well, it sounds FUN to play with. But also, I like the idea of labeling DVD/CD's with my and my client's logo, version info, contact info, etc...and yes, i guess I could get an external Firewire/USB drive but then it's another thing to diddle with when I am working.

I mean fer goodness sakes, this is supposed to be a highend business system yet not all the options are to be had easily and I just cannot justify the extra $400 for the NW9440.

I guess I could call the sales line...but I just wanna order online...waaaaa!! hehehehe...thanks for your help! BTW, you have a BrightView system right? Wish it was a non-BV build number... ;)

oh wait...I just checked the spec sheet link again. And since last night the ATI card is back...either that was not oregano I put on my salad last night or the ATI card was not shown last night...sigh...old age is fun cuz it makes everything new again when you got CRS (can't remember, ummm, "stuff"...) :D

Heh, Mine only had the option for the Nvidia card, and I am fine with that. It's fast, great test results so far from it.

I have the 1680x1050 Bright view display, but it's nowhere near as glossy as my dv8000t was. I really like this display. It's not perfect, but it's suitable for me :)

    Hi Jason,

I love the config for your system. It looks to be a nice sweet spot. Nothing over the top but it will still have plenty of oomphhh for a few years.

I have not played a computer game since Doom was new!! I just don't find the time. So, game performance is never an issue for me. I just need to horsepower to run graphic desgin stuff, SQL Server, MS VS05 and watch some IPTV while I work some days...and this bad boy will really fill all those needs and then some. Mostly I love the huge display!!

I did go and look at the only HP's near by and those were at BestBuy/CostCo/CompUSA and all of them were just too reflective. I also work near sunlight or overhead lights and there is that concern (real or imagined) hehehehe...but I hated my Insprion 8500 from the day it arrived 4-yrs ago (stoopid WUXGA tiny stinking letters on a 15.4" display, wtf were they thinking!! hehehehe.) I do not wanna feel that way about this new beastie.

I am going to hold out ordering until maybe the end of next week to see if anything changes after Jan. 1. I know Dell used to either announce or release new stuff in late December/early January...not sure about HP as I have not dealt with them before.

I could not decide about the BrightView thing. I was out shopping yesterday and ran across a dv9033cl at costCo marked way down as it was the display model. It has a BV display so bought it. I figured if I liked it I could give it to my better half as her computer since I am not going to replace the mb in my dead Inspiron 8500 because it has been a lemon since day one and the OLD inspiron 5000 is just, well, OLD and has had an issue of eating HDDs since day one.

Anyway, after spending a day with the BV it really is too reflective for my needs. But, DANG is it AWESOME picture wise. I have never seen a display of this quality...

I am slo glad I was not wanting a dv9000 series system because the keyboard layout is just an abonination against nature. Small right-shift and a wired layout in general on the right hand side of the keyboard. The other issue I find with the dv9000 series if the location of the mic/speaker connectors being right in front directly below the trackpad. When I connecta headset or speakers they tend it get in the way either for my thumb or moving the laptop around.

But, I LOVE the feel of these HP keyboards. And could almost live with it is the NX9420 used the same layout, but thank the PC Gawds HP uses a different keyboard layout in the business series. It's more traditional with reguar full sized keyboards so there is likely not much of an adjustment period.

But buying this system let me have some quality time with HP systems in general. I am now able to make a much more informed purchase and know exactly what I want...and will go ahead with an NX9420. After the 1st just in case there is some change in the offerings/pre-config systems HP offers.

I found this model RB548UA#ABA which has one of the new C2D cpu's and the matte display. It seems to only be lacking the Lightscribe Optical drive. So I emailed several vendors as well as HP again to see if there is a way to add a Lightscribe drive that base system. If not is there a model number that indeed has a Lightscribe.

I will not let the lack of an internal Lightscribe drive deter my purchase as I can always just buy and external drive but that is a PITA. I sure would prefer if it was there and it is silly there is not one as an option. Oh, I emailed eBay sales three times now and never have gotten a direct answer if there is a way to get an NX9420 with a Lightscribe drive unless it gets there by accident. :D

thanks...yeah, on other systems it's either a free or $25 upgrade. I would really rather not spend $200 for one. If I did that I might as well order an NX9440 but I don't need or forsee the need to the higher horsepower graphics card.

I know this is a minor detail. But I am just puzzled by the lack of them in this model notebook. I was all set to order the other day only to realize the did not make any mention of the drive type nor do they provide part numbers for the components in each configuration so one can check to see if the descriptions correspond to the listed parts.

Not a complaint about them just a puzzle...and puzzles are fun, sort of... ;)
