that would depend on the laptop model

Finally I've find that sh** . This is round , flat ( 15mm ) battery hidden in right top corner of laptop , but after 2 days waiting without batteries , BIOS still demand an password !!!!
How long should I wait to reset that bustard ? -
you need to move a jumper to drain the cmos, hp support should be able to tell you where it is
-
you only need to remove 1 screw

It depends on what type of password is being asked. If it's asking for a system boot password, then it may be able to be reset. If it's asking for a HDD password (HP's can set a password on the HDD to protect the data), there's no way to reset the password, well, without knowing what the password is. I'm not sure if HP does the same or not, but IBM has the exact same feature. When an HDD password is set, it's stored on the systemboard AND the HDD. If one of the parts was replaced (like the HDD), the systemboard will re-apply the password onto the new HDD. If the systemboard is replaced, the HDD will re-apply the password to the systemboard. You need to replace both parts at the same time for it to work. This was a way to deter people from stealing these notebooks. It'll cost about the same to replace these parts as it would be to buy a new notebook.
If this is just a basic BIOS password, then pulling the CMOS battery & main battery (usually works). You may need to short some jumpers or contact pads, but this is not guaranteed to work. If it doesn't, you need to send to HP to remove the password. That's after you've proven to HP that this is your notebook.
