    Hi,

I am in desperate need of help, I was using my older brother's laptop and it froze. I decided to shut it down and start it up. It never got to the windows log in screen. So i shut it down and started it up again. Again same thing. I do this for 10 times and I cannot get in. So i decide to press f11?? and I get into the recovery manager thing.

Once in the recovery manager, I decide to backup the computer just in case it does not start up again. Then, I do a restore point thing to a previous date, then follow the instructions and restart the computer, but still no good.

I give up and just pop in the recovery discs my brother made before, it turns out ok, everything is back to factory settings.

I decide to give the back up ago, and my brother would not suspect a thing, BUT, the backup won't run....what am a younger sister to do???

His laptop is a HP dv6626 Canadian Running on Windows Vista Home Premium

Please Help! I got one week until he gets back from break....

i think you might be screwed ,it may be a fried motherboard which is what happened to my first notebook and is expensive to fix but i got a blue screen of death first; for now just take it to a local best buy or computer store and see if they can help

You realize, of course, that by reinstalling the OS you will overwrite everything on your brothers notebook, right? :(

Turn on the notebook, when the HP screen comes up, press F10 and get into the BIOS; go over to System Configuration, then Boot Options, then Boot Order. Make sure the CD/DVD drive is at the top of the list (use the F5 and F6 keys to move it); then hit F10 to save and exit.

Make sure the recovery disk is in the drive and restart the computer; it will check the CD/DVD drive first and boot into recovery. If not, I suggest you follow jonhapimp's advise and take it to someone who can help you out.

    Good Luck!

So did you already use the recovery disks and reinstall everything to factory settings?

When you created the backup of the computer, how did you do it? and where did you create the backup to?

If you can't get the backup to work, you could try and recover some of his files, although most will be overwritten, you might be able to get a few. Try the program RecoverMyFiles, you can try it for free and it will show you all the files that it was able to find, but then you have to buy the program to restore the data.

If you did create a backup though, I would call HP and see if their tech support can help you figure out if it's corrupt, or if there is a way to get it to work. I don't know what backup method you used so I can help too much in that department.

Back up the data. You can run a Linux LiveCD, and pull his important data off the hard drive.

Download Ubuntu here. It may take a while, depending on your connection.

Install this little utility, and use it to burn the Ubuntu ISO to a blank CD.

Power up the laptop and hit F8 or one of those keys to change the access the boot sequence, and change it so it boots from the CD. Insert and boot from the CD.

You can now access the hard drive and transfer the desired data onto an external hard drive or flash drive(s).

    Good luck...
