I am in the market for a laptop with extended battery life and some gaming. I have been researching long and hard and saw at the local best buy the HP 6258se. The specs are below. The question I have is how is the AMD Turion X2 chips? I've heard everything from they consume too much power to they overheat. Do they really? Are they that unreliable? I understand that the Core 2 Duo is the latest and AMD hasn't produced their equivalent yet. This laptop comes with a 12 cell battery that HP customer support says should give me 8-12 hours.
Any more info on this laptop? I can't seem to find any reviews or benchmarks.

The X2's are fine for general everyday use. They run fairly cool and are comparable to the heat output of Core 2 Duo/Core Duo. There are no reliability issues as well and again are comparable to any other processor manufacturer in the market. As for as the battery life 8 - 12 hrs is a bit of a stretch, expect the average battery life for the 12 cell to be around 5 - 6 hrs. Manufacturers usually list the max battery life under ideal conditions, so dont go by what they say since it is usually going to be lower.

Thanks for the reply. I just wish I could see some comparison charts on these processors but can't seem to find them. The HP rep actually said 8 hours but I should see around 6 with the 12 cell battery.

I have a dv6258 se. All i can tell you is that for what i do (photoshop, video editing, web browsing and other normal stuff, even a few games) the computer runs great. Also, i have not had a chance to test the battery yet, but you should expec like 4-6 hours depending on conditions.
Overall it is a great system. even though it is not as fast as core 2 duo systems, it doesnt really matter to me because it is still fast and responsive as hell. -
I think the only cavity of these models is their graphics card. The Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 is really an entry level chip and is not the best option for gamers. Whether ypu go with an AMD X2 or an Intel 2 Duo solution, get a model that has at least the Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 with its discrete own 256Mb ram.

I am also planning to go for HP 6258se..its charming look doesn't let me think of anything else...
but b4 that i wanted to clarify a few things from the experienced users out here... how is AMD Turion 64 X2 Tl-56 compared to Intel duo core 2?
and is nvidia 6150 enough for regular use with the potential to extract the best out of Windows Vista Aeroglass feature?
I ud appreciate ur comments...
given, I am a student pursuing master's in ee and surely won't have enuf time for gaming nor am much into it...besides the regular use, i ud use the laptop for simulations n running sm softwares concurrently... -

The X2 TL-56 admittedly doesn't compare too favorably with the Core 2 Duo, but the performance difference isn't something that's going to be noticed in everyday use. Like an above user, I stress the crap out of mine (video editing, Photoshop, gaming) and I have yet to be disappointed by it; more impressed than anything. I guess the bad word of mouth gave me low expectations of what the Turion 64 X2 was capable of.
The Go 6150 is plenty for Vista Aero Glass, and though you won't be using it for gaming, it can definitely do in a pinch. (I've been enjoying Guild Wars on mine. In class.)
The battery life on it is pretty excellent; with WiFi on you can push five to six hours easy.
I love mine. Sure the hardware is for the most part a downgrade from the ASUS A8Jm I used to have, but it's a hell of a lot more fun to use, and it lasts for-freaking-ever on the battery. -
that sounds pretty good to me...
by the way how much did it cost to those who bought this? i guess prmotion offer is off now...and it now costs me around $1300 bucks... how does it fit with this price tag? -
I went and picked up the HP 6258se yesterday and i tinkered around with it last night. The first thing that i noticed was... oh my God... the size of the battery! Its like something is growing out of the undercarriage of my laptop. I have seen large capacity batteries sticking out of laptops but this is ridiculous. I understand the concept that on a table it tilts the laptop for you but it does look pretty hideous.
Other then that the look and feel of the laptop is very nice. The keys are very impressive, very tight. The screen is pretty amazing. I played a DVD in power saver mode with wireless off and it went for 4 hours. I also tried downloading torrents in power saver mode and I was averaging 30 mins for every 10% of the battery life in power saver mode. I don't know what else to try to get 6 hours out of it.
I also thought what the heck, lets try out this graphics card so I installed Battlefield 2142 and it ran. It was at the lowest settings and it ran pretty smoothly. The frame rate wasn't as smooth as my desktop which has a Nvidia 7600 graphics card but I was impressed that it played the game. -
If you have $1300 to spend, I recommend customizing one from HP.

so it seems to be a good buy... it ud have been great to have within $1100 but in my opinion I don't see any offer with the configuration this laptop has to have within a budget of $1100 (specifically the offerings from HP/Sony)...
i guess we surely need 2 GB to get best out of Vista and equivalent of x2/core duo as the processor...
really i am riding on horns of dilemma but ud appreciate if some one can refer to a better option or strongly recommend 6258se for $1300.... -
Depends on what you want. Other than the graphics card, it really is a great system. The amount of ram+ large hd and 12 cell capacity, make it a good bargain at 1300 IMO. gaming on it isnt that bad for a casual gamer either. I run half life 2, guild wars, cs source and age of empires three with no problems.

Best Buy updates their sales every Sunday, so keep an eye on the ads on their site.
I wholeheartedly recommend the dv6258se. I love mine; my girlfriend bought hers because she was jealous of it, and when I was in Best Buy the other night, I convinced a woman who was waffling on it to buy it. It's frigging great. -
thanks there!
@Pulp
but did u get money back then...i don't think so..sale is all luck game u see...
now i can't wait any longer hearing such nice things of a nicer piece....2morow is sunday and I hope best buy guys r listening 2 my prayer...."put 6258se on sale "..;-) -
I wouldn't worry too much about the AMD64 x2. HP ships the machine with Windows Vista 32bit. The tech I asked about this told me the motherboard won't support 64bit. What a maroon. I believe the HP Quick play developers were just too lazy to port their code to 64bit. More as I come across it.
