Hi guys, I'm looking for a laptop for a laptop for college, I'll be doing some gaming (games like A.V.A, Badcompany, etc)
I was originally looking at the Dell Xps 15/17 but this laptop came to my attention due to it's lower price (25% off coupon) (for better specs), better looks, and better battery life. (6 cell).
I have a couple questions about this laptop, if any owner would be kind to answer. (again, this is the DV6T Select Edition, not normal one)
- Does it have switchable graphics? It doesn't say on Hp's website. I've searched the forum and i heard they are manual switchable? Is that true?
- How is the touchpad like? I'm not feeling too good about the integrated touchpad buttons.
If it has switchable, and the touchpad is ok, I'm looking forward to buying this laptop instead of the XPS.
Thanks

Interesting that you play AVA.
Anyways, it is switchable but it a software manual switch. The touch pad is better than my series, they have real buttons.
The 6770 card on the dv6t is much better than the xps 15 540m. However, be warned the driver support is not good, you are dependent with HP for their driver release.
Since you play AVA, there are odd video behavior with the amd switchable like missing crosshairs on the precision scopes, constant profile reset on every reload. There are workarounds but I doubt you like them.
Also, you will be disadvantaged with the 1366x768, you have a smaller perspective and narrow vertical field of view than those with 1080. -
thanks for your reply,
I see you also own a Dell XPS 15. Graphics card isn't the deciding factor for me here, since as I said I play games that require little power.
What is the battery life for your dell xps? (if you have 6 cell)
Also, if i get the XPS 15 1080p screen, how does the DPI scaling work? Does it look natural if i change resolution in windows?
EDIT: I just found out the coupon is for the Quad edition, which is actually cheaper than the Select Edition but I prefer the i5 520/540m. So price for the Dv6 and XPS 15 are exactly the same.
For the configs i have, the DV6 costs: $980
XPS 15: $1130 -
Just to clarify this, the select edition does NOT have the 6770M. I hope you're talking about the quad edition?

What?? I just checked it does have the 6770M option.
Why would they make that difference besides having different part number for the motherboard?
The battery life is pretty much 6 hrs on the 6 cell on basic web surfing for my xps.
If you use other than the native resolution, it somewhat blurry.
Generally windows DPI scaling mostly applies to how to render the size of text will look like.
Standard video games are usually not affected by it since they rendered in other ways. -
