I need a new battery for my 8510p. Something very odd happened. I noticed that my battery has seemed to not last for very long these days. I saw HP's battery check software on their site and downloaded it. At the time I started the check, the battery was at 93%. The software determined that the battery needs to be replaced. The odd thing is that after I took the laptop off of the dock to check it's wireless connection, the battery charge plummeted (within a couple of minutes) to 11%, where it has remained ever since and refuses to charge beyond that. It's almost as though the software pushed it over the edge somehow.

Anyway, I do need a new battery and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to a good replacement for it or suggestions for vendors with good prices.

    Thanks!

Just thought I should add that the original battery was the PB992UT, an 8-cell. I'm thinking that I would like a 12-cell battery. So recommendations from 8510p users who have a 12-cell and are happy with its performance will be greatly appreciated!

I'm in the same boat as you, although my battery charges in about 5 minutes from 0 to 100 percent. After about 2 years of solid use, I have only about 5-10 minutes of power with the 8-cell battery...

Just stick with the original 8-cell battery. The 12-cell battery is actually a secondary battery that fits underneath the laptop. Plus, you won't be able to use the dock with the 12-cell battery (HP makes an 8-cell version which does allow you to use the dock).

Of course, you could get both the primary 8-cell and either of the secondary batteries (8 or 12 cell) for some pretty outrageous battery life!

These HP batteries seem to last 1.5-2 years MAX. Many people at my school have their batteries completely die after only 1 year or even sooner (everyone at my school has either the 8510w or its predecessor, the nw8440). Everyone was telling me how lucky I was to still be getting 30 minutes of battery life after 1.5 years!

Currently, my nw8440 is on its 2nd battery, and it still gets 2 hours after 1 year and 4 months (the machine itself is just about 3 years old).

People like to say that HP batteries are crap, but I think that HP's "Fast Charge Technology" is to blame, since everyone knows that the more rapidly you recharge a battery, the harder it is on the cells. (Charging the first 90% in 90 minutes is pretty fast).

Thanks very much for replying! I appreciate it. I went ahead and ordered an HP 8-cell that's specced for this machine. I may add a secondary 12-cell later, as you suggest. I just completed (successfully, I think) an undervolting procedure on the computer so that will help with the battery life I think. I'll also be more careful about removing the battery and using it only when needed. This notebook is on a dock most of the time, and on AC otherwise. I now understand that leaving the battery connected all of the time didn't help with its longevity. Of course if the batteries only last 1.5 to 2 yrs anyway, I got a decent run out of it. ;)

    Thanks again!
