I am interested in ordering the dv6700t special edition. But one complaint I have noticed on various forums is fan noise. I am not interested in playing games, but I would watch an occasional movie. I was wondering if going with integrated x3100 graphics would be quieter than the discrete 8400M GS. The $50 upgrade to the 8400M looks like a good deal, but not if it means a louder notebook. What are your experiences? I am guessing you get one or the other and cannot remove the 8400M like in a desktop PC.

The x3100 would definately be cooler but the fan noise will be the same. Chances are the fans will go on less with a integrated card.

Its not just the GPU that makes heat. GPU and CPU share the same fan. If one of them is getting too hot then the fans will go on

I recently had a Dv6700t, and noticed that the fan was almost always on. This was used mainly surfing the net, and playing music. So, get used to the fan being on if you do buy it :)

MikesDell: Did you have an AMD or Intel? Also what GPU?

How much battery life would I gain with the X3100? And would the laptop feel noticeably cooler? I am not interested in games, but I have read that the x3100 has many software glitches, including playing videos.

I ordered it with the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.
    T5450 I beleive.
Also, since I hardly ever game at all, I ordered it with the cheapest GPU I could get (integrated graphics).

Hey Ford, how does his battery life compare with yours? I am interested in a notebook with the same specs as yours. How does the fan compare?
