Hey guys, I have an HP Envy 14 Beats Edition 1000 series if I'm correct and for the last couple of months it's been overheating that I had to stop trying to play any games on it or it would automatically shut down, but now it's getting to the point where I can't watch 1080p videos or do anything that gets the CPU load above 15% before it shuts down.
Now I currently am running low on funds, and I need to fix this laptop ASAP for uni and work, so I have chosen to try and fix this laptop myself so I've been reading around trying to figure out what to do. Now I've come to the point where I found a good thermal paste (IC Diamond 7, I was going to go for Artic Silver 5, but I read that it takes 200 hours to settle), but now I come across the fact that only the CPU uses thermal paste while the GPU uses a thermal pad.
I looked around and most people say it's best to use a copper shim if I want to replace the thermal pad, but I can't find any on eBay that is from the same country as I am (Australia). Is it possible to remove the thermal pad and just replace it with thermal paste to save a bit of money?
I know my CPU runs about on normal tasks 50 - 60C in 28-30C weather, however it shoots up to 80-90C within seconds if it sees CPU loads go up to above 25%. Which obviously tells me I need to replace the thermal paste and clean out the heatskins and fans
Now, from what I can tell, my GPU runs about 55C on normal tasks in about 28-30C weather and used to run about 68-75C while gaming (when I could), so should I bother replacing the thermal pad or not? I know it's good practice to just replace it while my laptop is open anyway, and I want this laptop running in top shape again so I don't have to open it up a few months down the line, so should I bother or not?
Another issue I have is that I'm not sure is the size of things for themal pads thickness (0.5mm, 1mm etc), which size would be most fitting for a laptop? I can't seem to find any details regarding the Envy 14 thermal pad sizes.
Would you guys be able to help with a few of these questions?
Cheers, much appreciated.
Need help regarding differences between Thermal Paste and Thermal Pad (HP Envy14 or just general)
