I have an older Compaq Armada m700 PIII 700MHz 128+64Mb RAM

This is my project Laptop, and I have noticed it gets hot and the main fan doesnt seem to run. It has not over heated on me yet (doesnt mean it has not happened and no one told me  ) When I start the laptop, the fan runs only when it is plugged in, and once windows starts (XP Pro) it stops. I have tried to find a fan control program, but Speedfan wont recognize any fan on the computer  I would like to have the fan run all the time as this thing can get hot. I read something about WinXP being the issuse, but it was regarding another laptop brand. This Laptop came with Win 98 or NT. There is nothing in the Bios about it.

If anyone has one of these Bad Boys, or has any ideas of what may work Id like to hear it :) I want to control the fan and view temps. Thanks

Well it sounds like an older laptop, the fans are most likely all clogged up with dust, and the thermal compound on the CPU is likely warn and or dried up. As long as the notebook boots and the fan works it will run during the initial startup process. It could also be a worn out/dead heat sensor on the heatsink.

Now, if you really are an "Instrument Mechanic" what kind of oil would you recommend to clean an unfinished rosewood fretboard? So that it won't form a waxy buildup over time and will still allow the wood to naturally absorb the finger oils and sweat.

Its funny you say that, when I tell people my occupation they either think I fix Pianos and such, or they dont have a clue what I do. In truth I work in an Oil Refinery, and I repair, install and maintain plant instrumentation (Process Temperature, level, pressure and flow. I have no idea what to use sorry. I will look into the sensor though... thanks for the idea.
