Well, i'm looking at buying my first laptop. I have been desktop owner for quite some time, i'm no expert but I do have pretty good basic computer knowledge.

I am completely lost on TV tuners though. I have looked around and read what I can, but I can't seem to find the answers to some very very basic questions, I was hoping you guys could help me out some :)

Probably the biggest point for me is, is there such a thing as a tv tuner that does not need an external cable plugged into it? I'm a big fan of no wires. I don't even have cable tv at my home, so there obviously isn't a coax cable for me to hook into my laptop. Can I get local tv channels with a tv tuner?

Is the TV tuner included with my laptop a good choice? Or should I shop around and look for other brands?

Like I said, I am completely lost on this subject. So any and all information on laptop TV tuners is much appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Zach

You can get over-the-air HDTV (and analog TV, if you must) with an antenna. What you use for your current TV set will generally do.

I don't like ExpressCard tuners. They dump too much heat into the notebook chassis. I recommend external USB tuners like the OnAir GT USB HDTV tuner that I have.

Thanks! How do I get over the air HDTV with just the antenna im currently using though? Is there some sort of online subscription service? And I will definitely consider getting an external one, overheating is one of my concerns :)

OTA (over the air) HDTV is free. All you need is a capable HDTV tuner card and an antenna to receive the signal. There's no fee for OTA HDTV.

IMO the one that comes with the laptop is just fine... you will have to attach an antenna to it, just like any real TV. think of it as a portable TV

If you need the expresscard HP one, I have a new one that I got as a gift and I can sell it to you for 75 bucks. It does not fit in my tx1000z plus I have a usb one.

I second the advice to get an external USB one. The internal one gets extremely hot.

First of all if you made the effort to look in the buy sell forum you would see that I lowered the price 2 days ago to 60 dollars.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=179229&page=2

Secondly the link you provided, is an ebay link where the price for one of these tuners ranges from 45 dollars- 90 dollars. Therefore 60 dollars is a fair price. If you want to buy it from ebay go and do so but next time you try to play smart at least make an effort to not to look like a fool in front of everyone else.

Man, people are awful when one tries to sell something in this forum.
