Hey guys... I've been looking around to make a ram upgrade for my laptop and I found this post "http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=300912" and it seems that someone has been able to make the 4gb upgrade even though supposedly the motherboard doesnt handle it. I've looked around on the net and some sites say that possibly the dv9420us may recognize the ram upgrade.
I need to know if anyone besides the dude from the post has been able to do this and still have a working laptop instead of a burnt one... Please any info regarding what type of ram, places to buy, etc. will be extremely appreciated...
Thanks beforehand...

Pavilion dv9420us specifications
All HP AMD notebooks that use DDR2 memory support 4GB. I put 4GB in my dv9208nr and clean installed 64-bit Vista. I recommend Crucial brand for AMD notebooks, DDR2-667 in this case.
Be sure to flash in the latest BIOS for this notebook, especially if your fan isn't running 24x7. The NVIDIA chipset is defective and will fail from thermal stress, eventually, if the fan isn't kept running. -
I have the latest bios for my Quanta 30b9 motherboard. The hp representatives have said that it cant handle 4gb upgrade. I'm currently running Windows 7 64 bit.

Never assume that HP representatives know what they're talking about.

Thanks for all your help brian. Now, I have found 2 sites which have the RAM modules for my laptop. Which would you recommend?

Thanks again for all your help. -
FYI: If you're using vista 32 bit, then you're OS won't recognize more than 3GB anyway. You need vista 64.

Crucial, definitely. I'd buy in the form of a 4GB kit:

Which Newegg has on sale at the moment:

I've bought from both. You won't go wrong with either one. -
Brian you've been of great help... I'm going to purchase the ram modules this week. Lets hope everything works out... Have to make a couple of mods to the laptop, hinges, battery, ram and im looking to see if the hdd can be upgraded...

I have a HP dv9429us, which is probably very similar to the dv9420us model.
I'm also considering going 4Gb.
Do you think these laptops will accept the slightly faster DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) ram instead of the DDR2667 (PC2 5300)? -
DDR2 667 is the max your laptop will accept. You can still buy and use DDR2 800 memory but it will downclock to DDR2 667 speeds. Pretty much no advantage...get whichever one is cheaper.

Just bought 2 x ($35.49) NBM 2G|KST KVR800D2S6/2G RT - Retail aka Kingston 2x2GB PC6400 SODIMM sticks for my dv9420us. Will update upon arrival and installation.

I have the Dv9420us also. Are you guys sure 4G instead of 2G is better? I put 4G of Corsair DDR2 667mhz in and it boots in exactly the same time, 50 seconds. I am using 7/64. Photoshop CS4/64 Extended opens the first time in 16 seconds with either 2G or 4G or ram. After closing and reopening CS4, and it has found all of its file locations it takes 3-4 seconds.
BIOS and OS show 4G, but i wonder if the board or chipset is actually using the extra 2G. With either Vsta or 7, I should see a noticeable improvement in speed, shouldn't I?
How can i test to see if 4G is running any faster? -
Real funny. I tried this benchmark test with both 2G and 4G and the 4G test was 1/10 of a second faster, so help me. The benchmark is a series of photoshop filters that can be timed, some are short, some take a long time, and measure CS4's use of ram and processor speed. The times ranged from 3.6 seconds to 37.2 seconds. For instance the first test w/4G was 3.8s and with 2G, 3.9s
