Had a problem with my HP DV7 and did a system restore, however it never went back on. It just went to a black screen with my mouse. Called HP and we ran some tests. Since my hard drive passed all the tests they determined (rather quickly I might add) that i need to re-format. I said I'm going to explore other options.

I don't mind re-formatting, but I don't want to lose my stuff. I bought a hard drive enclosure so I can transfer files from my HD to my other laptop/external HD. However, it appears the screws on my laptop are stripped. Seeing as this is a replacement laptop (my original was a lemon), I can't say I'm surprised.

So my question is, can I actually move the files on the HD without removing the HD itself?

    Thanks

I don't think so, especially if the OS doesn't boot. I'd suggest attempting to get at the internals at all costs and see if you can purchase replacement screws online, because the stripped screws are useless anyways.

    Best of luck!

Boot with a liveCD of your choise, then transfer files to external drive.
