My sister has a HP laptop with a bad DVD burner, it won't burn and it makes a grinding sound whenever a disk is in the drive. I don't know the model, anyway it's still under warranty and I'm wonder if she will have to send the laptop back in order for them to replace it. Sending it back is a big no no, and I can replace the drive myself.

Call HP's customer service. You may be able to convince them that the problem is in the actual DVD drive and get them to send out a drive if you send back the broken one. Worst you can do is try.

If you take the drive out of the laptop (there is exactly one screw holding it), you will find a label with the HP Part Number. From there i suppose you know what to do.

hn333- I had to replace my bluray shortly after using it. Call HP and they will ask for your model and serial #. They will look up your system if you orderd it from them if not like the other post said remove the one screw and slide it out. They will send you a replacement drive, they were supposed to send replacement instruction bt didn't. But with that being said it is an easy replacement as you will see once you pull out the defective drive. You should have the replacement in a day or so and then put the bad on in the box and slap there return label on it and you're back in business. Smooth process on my end hope it is the same for you.

My issue was with the HDX 18 CTO1100, which is now going to be replaced by a DV8 due to some issues I had with a send to factory repair on my HDX18. As for the bluray exchange that is fed-ex out to you and you replace it. Hope that answered your question.
