So long story short.. One day, i was greeted by a lovely screen upon startup of my laptop saying that i had a defective cooling system, so i sent it into HP for repairs under warranty and they sent it back after holding onto it for 3 weeks.. still broken.. with a little slip saying they didn't cover accidental damage.

I had a friend offer to fix the computer for me, provided i could buy the parts, the problem being that I have no idea which fan / heatsink i am supposed to buy (I like to be really sure when i'm purchasing this kind of stuff).

My laptop is a DV6T-7000 Quad Edition w/ Core i7 Ivy Bridge, 8GB RAM, 2GB NVIDIA GT 650M, 750 GB 7200RPM hybrid HDD.

One friend told me that this part looked like it might be the right fan/heatsink, but it says dv6-7000, not dv6t-7000, so i'm not exactly sure if it is or not and confirmation would be really helpful. If someone could tell me where else i can buy this part, that would be really great as well. And i'm also not sure if i need to buy thermal paste, but if i do, which kind should i be buying for this?

Thanks for your time! I really appreciate any help!

dv6-7000 and dv6t-7000 are referring to the same computer

Take out the fan if you can and look up on eBay with that part number and you should be able to find a matching part number to fit your hp. That is the best way to replace the fan with a matching part number listed on your fan. I am assuming your able to take apart the laptop of which you will find the fan and a sticker on it telling its part number. Other wise if you can lookup on hp your model number and find the Service Manual and find the fan part number and use that on eBay to find the part as well. So that there won't be any parts mismatch.

Yeah, thanks for the replies, I don't know how to fully take it apart, so i took a look at the manual and found out i almost ordered the wrong part xD. Now i've ordered the right one (part no. 682061) instead and it should be here in 3 weeks.

That's why you always have to dissemble it to get the right part and then find the part number otherwise you will get restocking charges. Just make sure you look on the net there should be others whom have paper work and or video how to take apart the laptop and that should give you a idea how to work on yours.
