I 've downloaded and updayed the BIOS from F.06 to F.15 from HP website. I run core 2 duo t5200, windows media center. Since i updated the cooling fan it comes on more frequently than it did, and the speed varies when it's on as well. My question is,is it normal? And i notice a new option in the bios for enabling or disabling C4 function?
    Any help would be appreciated.

...and that would be dv2000 or dv6000?

HP often changes the temperature threshold of the fans; if don't want to hear it that often flash back.
What do you refer to as the c4 option?

The C4 option is is just what allows the cpu to go into a deep "sleep" stage. It will not fix the whining noise that is common place in most HP laptops.

As for reflashing the BIOS back to an older version, I wouldnt recommend it. If they changed the fan temp threshold it was because they decided the old way wasnt as good for the system. The DV9000 series only has 1 fan. Not sure what the others have but being there is only 1 fan it isnt as adequete at cooling the system. The speed is changing because the fan is throttleing to meet the requirements set forth by HP. It is completely normal. Hope any of this helps.

it did actually (once i'd disabled the C4 setting in BIOS anyway!!).

it's still a bit annoying about the fan tho, it comes on for prelonged periods of time now, whereas before it would remain quite dormant and then give a quick burst.

i did notice (using RM Clock), that this has caused the temp level to drop around 10 degrees. i'm assuming, therefore, that there must have been a change in the thermal settings of BIOS. why can't they just bring out something that works??

it'll be interesting to see what happens when i get the vista upgrade, i doubt it'll change much tho!

Because they are a business who belive in profit among all else which is to include quality. Technically the laptop should have at least two fans to vent it. Maybe an option of vid cards and more ram too. The only thing of those that would increase the cost slightly is adding the fan and extra dim slot. nothing too much though. Oh well such is life

Two fans mean more noise, less battery, more prone to failures. HP used to have a separate fan for HDD and CD/DVD ( I have such on my zv6000) but the fan rarely turns on as I don't do intensive/demanding HDD operations.

Might mean more noise and less battery but it means a cooler system. Im all for my electronics being cooler than quiter

I noticed a big increase in fan on time when I went from f8 to f13. I'm a little nervous to make the move to f15 now.

cahoole: what are you're before and after temps in RMclock?

EDIT: I just went on HP's website and now they have f.23 available, as well as some other new software I haven't seen before.

4cefed4: prior to upgrading to f.15 my RM temp, on average, would be around 35-50 degrees C. Now it is around 25-40. i don't know whether it is because it is simply very cold in th UK today but the fan doesn't seem to be working as hard as it was last night (just after flashing bios).

i'm quite happy with it now. i also noticed that with f.15 the buzzing still comes on when using battery power, but only when i have the RM Clock PST at its lowest setting, otherwise, it just makes a little squeaking noise but nothing too irritating!
