I think I have a bad HD-DVD/DVD+/-RW drive in my new dv9700t. I cannot get the drive to eject and I notice the LED on the drive is flashing continuously -- which I know is not normal.

I checked under Device Manager and it says it's working properly. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. No change. So I'm suspecting it might be a hardware issue.

I took a paperclip and was able to use the emergency eject (after powering everything down). So nothing seems jammed or anything. Everything looks OK.

Just thought I'd check here before calling HP in case there's something simple I don't know about that might fix this.

    Thanks!

Was there a disc in the drive?

Also check to see if the drive is stuck in PIO mode. Normally it would not effect anything if the tray is empty, but worth a shot......

Thanks for the reply, R4000! There was no disc in the drive. The only thing I can think of unusual, is that when I unboxed this, I touched the "DVD" button on the top above the keyboard and this caused the system to start-up and go into the setup process (vs. pushing the "power on" button). After the setup completed, the QuickPlay software started up. But everything seemed normal once I exited QuickPlay. Until I went to make recovery discs and found the drive would not eject.

How do I check for PIO mode?

Open up the Properties window for the appropriate IDE channel in Device Manager and click the advanced tab. The drive should be in DMA mode.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot tomorrow. I may also try doing a full re-install just to make sure I didn't screw something up. I've been searching and so far it seems the flashing LED might mean the drive is 'locked' or it might mean the firmware is bad, but not clear if that's true or just conjecture in the posts I've read elsewhere.

I am also going to power off and manually open the drive and put a DVD in it and then reboot and see if it can read the DVD and if that gives me any other clues.

    Thanks again for the help!

My dv9500t DVD drive does not eject on its own. When I press the button it clicks, but doesn't pop out. If I pull it a little bit, it comes out. Seems like a broken spring. Could it be the same thing?
