I have an HP Pavilion dv6000. When I purchased the laptop, I chose a 12 cell battery, and it has a sticker on it that states: Replace with 451864-001. My battery went bad, and I purchased a replacement at the HP Parts Store online. I specifically chose a 12 cell replacement, which brought up the same part number, i.e., 451864-001. However, when it came in the mail today, the battery looks like a 6 cell, as it's about 1/3 the size of the old 12 cell, despite my purchase receipt which states that I ordered a 12 cell and the packing slip which also states that HP shipped a 12 cell. The model number of the old battery is HSTNN-DB32, and the model number of the new battery is HSTNN-DB46. Unless they were able to shrink the 12 cell to make it resemble a 6 cell, I'm pretty sure I received a 6 cell, despite the notations in the purchase order and packing slip.
This is a long way of asking, is there a tool that I can install that will tell me how many cells are contained in the battery? The battery, itself, does not state how many cells it contains.
If it is a 6 cell, as I suspect, HP will be getting it back.
Thanks for any help.

There's no need to use any software, read the specs on the battery, and compare the capacity (if i remember right it's spec'ed in Whr on HP batteries), and compare with your old battery.
Otherwise you can use Everest or Battery Eater Pro (click Info -> Power supply -> Battery1 -> Basic). The capacity of a 12-cell should be 8800mAh. -
I didn't see any specs on either battery, except the following:
On the old 12 cell battery, it states 11.1V --- 95Wh
On the new battery, it states 10.8V --- 55Wh
If this new battery is a 12 cell, HP was able to really shrink the size of it, compared to the one purchased just two years ago. -
As for the fully charged capacity, it is normal for your old battery to have a really low capacity compared to its design (since it's worn out), but your new one shouldn't show the same. Either the software is wrong or the new battery is bad as well. Either way, you got a 6-cell and you should send it back. -

Spoke to the HP Parts Store today. Surprise -- the 12 cell I ordered was replaced with a 6 cell, although the Parts Store makes no mention of this. But here's the real shocker -- they said they intended to send two 6 cell batteries, to make up for the lack of a single 12 cell. LOL. So, "to make it right", they are overnighting a second 6 cell today.

Wonder what happened to their stock of 12 cell batteries? -

2x55Whr 6-cell batteries=110Whr. Better than than the 95Whr 12-cell.
In either case, the 18650 cells inside are either 2200ma or 2500ma. There are some 3000ma cells available now, so if wanted a higher capacity 133Whr could speak to some battery repackers asking for 3000ma cells.
New Battery -- 6 cell or 12 cell?
