This is my gf's new computer she got for the 400$ off and Im waiting for the next coupon of the same value and im making my purchase. I have already run pc decrapifier but is there anything else I need to remove for sure or is there a comprehensive list somewhere. Second, which startup programs can i stop? I'm just not sure, the only for sure I turned off was lightscribe. And lastly, we got her 64 bits so she could run the 4 gigs of memory, a great deal of the time just during normal activities we are running at about 38-44%, is this normal? Seems awfully high when we arent really multi tasking, just running ie, norton, and she has a program that must be connected while at school so she can be on the internet. Thanks guys.

Welcome to Vista, resource pig of the universe. My dv5t came with
2GB RAM and it uses 817MB at idle, with nothing running. And, this
is after I did a thorough cleaning with Revo. Contrast this to my
XP Pro desktop, which idles at 250MB, with several open windows.

one more question, my gf purchased the three year norton security, it says it will work on up to three other computers. Im about to purchase my dv5t and was gonna do the same but now am wondering if I can just piggy back off hers. Like, I was just download the software and be on my way using her activation code.

I don't want to rain on any parades, but do you absolutely have to go
with Norton? There are all kinds of issues with this software. It is very
resource intensive and will bury itself into every nook and cranny it can
    find on your hard drive.

I, personally, would not go this route, but it's your decision.

I am pretty sure Norton is the problem. It's a real resource hog. It will slow down your computer. I used Norton before, my computer was always slow. It crippled my pc ... after a lot of research in google, I found that I was not the only one who had this issue. Uninstalled Norton, and surprisingly .... system resource was 80% free.

My laptop right now is running quite a bit of apps, including a home movie being encoded to burn to dvd, AIM, firefox, steam, windows media player, windows live messenger, bluetooth and my RAM usage is at 52% (I have 4gb). Vista loads programs it thinks you might open so it opens them faster if you do. Also if a program needs more memory Vista will give it more. You could say, Why have 4gb of RAM when you only want to use 1gb? The other 3gb is just going to sit there doing nothing.

Good point. Now, what about norton guys, I read some reviews and a lot of people think this years is a lot better. Do i need to purchase it as well or not. Im kinda confused but its like 70$ I would save for 3 years of protection.

That's actually due to the prefetching. It allows you to load your most use apps much quicker than you would be able to do in Windows XP.

As for Norton and Mcaffee Both of those Antivirus programs are complete resource hogs. Use AVG or Avast instead.

I wouldn't go that far, but NOD32 is far more efficient and preferred by advanced computer users.

Download the new Eset Smart Security 3.0.669.0 and use it with NodLogin 9.6 for unlimited updates.
This software is only 25mb to download and never utilises much ram aswell.
I am using eset for a long long time and have recommended to many people, of which all of thm are happy i told thm abt it. Norton and Mcafee both suck big time, they r a virus not AV!!!!
