I have just bought an HP DV7-4070us laptop. I'm currently in the process of updating the drivers and I noticed that the video drivers on the HP website are older than the one available on the ATI website (the laptop has an ATI Mobility HD 5650). Can I use the drivers from the ATI website or are the HP drivers specifically made for the laptop?

Also as a side note there doesn't seem to be alot of talk of the version of the DV7 i bought. Did I make a bad choice? It looks like i got it for a good price ($849 after $50 mail in rebate from Fry's) but now I'm wondering if there's a reason the price was so low.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can use the latest ATI drivers on these laptops. I'm using Catalyst 10.7 on my dv7-4065dx.

Nothing wrong with these notebooks AFAIK. I have a dv7-4065dx, AMD triple core version with integrated ATI graphics and Blu-ray. Very nice machine, was only $750.

As long it does not contain the switchable graphics solution in it, otherwise using the ATI latest drivers is highly not recommended.

I bought my DV7 from Staples and have Catalyst 10.7s installed with no major issues at all.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry but the above quote confused me. My laptop does have the switchable graphics. Are you saying not to use the latest ATI drivers? If so why not? Are they not compatible with laptops with switchable graphics?

It just simply not supported nor stable on the switchable i5 series. There is a fine print on the ATI driver for a reason.

I think that is an excellent buy for the price, HD5650 is a good graphic card.
Concerning drivers, try the last Catalyst, if some problem appears just erase them with Driversweeper and install the HP ones.
