I need to output the screen from my new Envy 15 to a monitor that uses a VGA cord. I see that HP sells a rip off $50 adaptor but surely a cheaper alternative exists. I'm thinking that I could use the Envy HDMI port or Displayport to connect into my monitor's VGA screen (I don't need 1080p or anything as it just for web surfing and spreadsheete).

Any reasonable priced adaptors or cords folks have used? I searched these threads and found nothing.

My ENVY 15 had the HP HDMI to VGA adapter bundled with it. Honestly, any HDMI to VGA adapter should work. Only problem is when you want to convert Displayport to VGA, there may be a need for active adapter.

Will the HP HDMI to VGA Adapter work with the new Envy 15 & Envy 17 / 173D?

And if so, is there somewhere i can order a cheap knockoff of said adapter?

I know it will only work if it is supported by the HDMI port.

    Thanks!

AFAIK HP USA will not provide the adapter. I bought from HP APAC region.

So I've been looking at various options to be able hook my Envy 15 into a monitor that has a VGA input and another question arose. Seems like many options much less than the $50 HP charges but not sure of best method to use for a non-HP solution.

I've seen the following options for attaching a monitor; any of these work better than another in terms of ensuring compatibility and performance:

-Cable that utiliize's the Envy's display port.
-Cable that utilizes the Envy's USB port.
-Cable that uses the Envy's HDMI port.

Well, all of the ENVY's outputs are digital. The only reason that HDMI to VGA adapter would work is if the ENVY is outputing an analog signal out through the HDMI port (Which many of the pasy ENVY's have). I do not think that this capability exists with HP's implementation of the dispaly port.

The apple adapters DO NOT work with the HP laptops (Or so i have been told multiple times).

It is effectively not possible to output video through USB at 1080p on the cheap.

Not sure if it matters but all I want to display on my large external monitor is spreadsheets, Word docs and webpages. I don't need to be able to see 1080p programming output from the new Envy on my monitor.

Given that, what is the best, low cost option to use for purposes of hooking up my external monitor to the new Envy?

Since I posted the original question, I figure I would provide some assistance if someone is looking for an inexpensive solution. I just received the Display Port to VGA adaptor from NewEgg allowing me to easily hook my Envy 15 into my external monitor.

If you want to save some $, spend the $17 on this unit instead of the $50 charged by HP for their VGA adaptor
