The prices of the Envy Line have dropped and the Envy 15 now features i5-520M + ATI HD5830. If that implies switchable graphics than the battery life problems of the Envy are gone![]()
-
The description on the envy 15 hasn't updated yet. There will probably be an announcement soon. The thing I've heard is that the switchable graphics does require additional hardware on top of a discrete graphics card. So it might not be a sure thing.
-
Can you link me to the source of your information? Thanx.
Although, on the configuration page for the Envy 15, you can choose between HD5830 for i5, and HD5830 for i7. -
It was in the T410 and t510 thread on this forum. Take that for what its worth. The cpu does have an integrated gpu for sure. Just being able to switch is the issue. I don't know why they wouldn't give that option though considering the battery life benefits.
-
This is a pretty sweet setup, between the i5 and 5830 there should be more battery life and less heat, those two being main issues. Plus, there are now different display options, matte and glass one, it looks like.

I feel sorry for those people who paid about $2200 for the HP Envy few months ago. Now with the better specs (Better GPU), it costs less than $300
I used to configure this HP on December 2009 to buy one with this following specs
HP ENVY 15 Specifications $ 2,378 without Tax
Operating system Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-820QM Processor (1.73GHz, 8MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB)
Memory 6GB DDR3 System Memory (3 Dimm)
Hard drive 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
Graphics card 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 4830
Display 15.6" diagonal Full High Definition LED HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen Display (1920x1080)
Personalization Webcam Only
Networking Intel Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
Keyboard HP Color Matching Keyboard
Primary battery One 6 Cell Lithium Ion Polymer Battery
External optical drive External Slot SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer with 2 USB Ports
With everything the same but better GPU (ATI 4830 --> 5830) It costs me just $2045 without tax -
what are the chances that we are going to hear about the 17 inch at CES?, and maybe that it will have an option for a better graphics card?
-
Unfortunately, the new Envy with the mobility 5830HD will still have DDR3 as graphics memory.
Waiting for 15" Core i7 640-LM & ATI 58xx w/ GDDR5. Prolly be waiting until middle of the year for it tho... -
The 5830 is still crippled by a 128-bit memory bus with DDR3. It would be much more powerful if it used GDDR5.
-
Now I am starting to like the price. I can live with the i5 vs i7. That mean lower heat issue. I dont need 4 cores + hyperthread = 8 cores. i5 duo core + hyperthread = 4 cores is fine for my need.
Now the tempting part is
1) HP Envy i5
2) Thinkpad T410 i5
3) Sony CW i5
hmmm
I guess the only missing now for me on the Envy is the ability to choose single SSD. Nice! -
I wonder how the battery life is with the battery slice. Over 12 hours now?
-
Does anyone know how much of a performance boost the 5830 would offfer over the 4830 in original revision, or are there currently no benchmarks or anything to tell?
-
HP stop teasing us and give us the ENVY 14.
-
awesome! Now make it black and put an optical drive in it
-
whats the chance we will see a 5870 in a HP envy 17 inch... better question, whats the chance one can fit in an envy
-
I'd expect an increase of performance at lower resolutions. At higher ones (such as 1920x1080), however, the increase won't be great. -
-
-
You have to remember at 1300 its the lower res, but last I checked HP generally offers an update res for around $40 on many of their devices.

back up everybody im in shock (just saw m11x) this laptop was above $2000 now its lower than envy 13 and it has new gpu? hold up is this permanent or a limited time offer?
Im about to pull the trigger lol
Whats the difference between these 2 screens?
A. 15.6" diagonal Full High Definition LED HP Anti-glare Widescreen Display (1920x1080)
-$25.00
B. 15.6" diagonal Full High Definition LED HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen Display (1920x1080)
or should i go with i7-720 and stock screen -
Damn i feel sorry for the people who wasted money on this machine before the update. Well the prices are a lot better now.

I am really liking the anti-glare screen option - that is a very rare option on a non-business class notebook. The Envy 15 is a decent value for the money. i7, 1920x1080, HD 5830, 4GB, 500GB 7200RPM for < $1,600.

I just pulled the trigger. Went, configured one, and used this code: http://www.logicbuy.com/deals/hp-envy-15-core-i7-laptop/14729.aspx
Specs:
HP ENVY 15 customizable Notebook PC
* • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
* • Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-540M processor (2.53GHz, 3MB L2 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 3.06 GHz
* • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
* • 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
* • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5830 Graphics - For i5 Processors
* • 15.6" diagonal Full High Definition LED HP Anti-glare Widescreen Display (1920x1080)
* • One 6 Cell Lithium Ion Polymer Battery + One 9 Cell HP Envy Slim Fit Extended-Life Notebook Battery
Total price? $1430.33. Shipped. I'll just go pick up a cheap USB Blu-Ray drive from Newegg instead of buying the one from HP. The $300 off coupon sold me... I can deal with possibly not being able to use the integrated GPU at that price.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 2, 2015 -

I wish it shipped to Canada
the updated Envy looks like a great deal + the $300 off is just begging me to pull the trigger as well IF i could. -
If it wasnt for their crappy tech support i will order one right now.
-
lol
I just ordered one yesterday and now you give me a $300 coupon.
Oh well... From the looks of it, you can't cancel an order so I guess I am stuckLast edited by a moderator: Feb 2, 2015 -

It's all good! I just placed another order
I'll return the other when it gets here.
Didn't get anything other than the i5-540 and anti-glare 1080p screen.
Came out to $1230 shipped via 2 day
Somehow, it feels like I stole something from HP. Let's just hope the screen is of good quality... -
Share the coupon code.

anybody know if these are easily user-upgradeable, such as Cpu, ram, hdd, and gpu?
im looking to get the i7-720 and birghtview 1080p ($1340 to my door, will try efinancing or bill me later) -
Would an i5 cpu run cooler than the i7? I am tempted to get one but i'm worried about it running too hot.
-
i7 = higher heat output than i5 + NO switchable graphics = poor battery life
i5 = lower heat output + switchable graphics = great combo -
32nm parts is where its at for me
I would like the i7-620 but the i5-540 will do..... -
-
The coupon code isn't working anymore.
-
Is it confirmed that the i5 has switchable grafics? How easy would it be to upgrade the 2 memory slots the i5 has?
-
Any chance of a backlit keyboard of true Edge-To-Edge glass on this refresh, along with the hardware? Those, combined with the horrible BIOS at the time (Non ACPI compliant!) caused me to send back my day 1 Envy.

From watching the dis-assembly videos for the envy 15, switching out the HD and accessing two slots of memory for the i7 required the whole top panel of the laptop to be taken apart. There aren't any easy access panels to get to those components.
The i5 model only has two memory slots and they could either be in an easy place to access or in the more difficult one. It could be a chore to get to depending on how they designed the thing.
I don't see them changing changing how they access the HD either, so that's another thing to consider if you plan on upgrading in the future. -
4GB sticks cost $200 each from my research, and I'm not about to drop that.
-
I am totally with you on that one
-
I do like this config. The matte screen option combined with the powerful graphics make it just what I've been looking for. Wish I could downgrade the GPU/RAM options a bit to make it more affordable, but in time a similar coupon likely will come again. Sure beats out my next-best config (Lenovo T500) in performance, though. -
8GB DDR3 System Memory (4 Dimm) +$300.00
16GB DDR3 System Memory (4 Dimm) +$800.00
How does this data fall in line with the 2 dim slot notion. I'm just curious because I had planned on increasing the ram to 8gb myself after receiving it. -
GRRRR I bought mine the moment it came out, and now this...

New Envy 15 with i5 and HD5830!!!
