Ok. So here goes, im a HP-lover despite all the bad stuff i've now gone across on this forum.

But yesterday i unboxed my brand new Envy 17 2.0ghz i7 (2092eo), and started isntalling my usual apps: adobe CS, winrar, vlc, winamp, 4 browsers and then Office 2010. During that install the entire system frooze, the same way some other guy wrote about in another recent thread.

I had to hard-reset it and then i continued isntalling programs, after a while it happened when i was watching a movie, then it happened when i was copying files. It is a complete freeze, i still see the screen and fans are on but no I/O and i always have to hold down power button.

I tried downloading the new intel drivers as suggsted in the other thread, still frooze. I tried doing fulll recovery from HP's partition. Still freezes.

So does anybody have any idea what i should do? It was talked about the wifi card in the other thread, but why should that be the cause? And how did you reach this conclusion?

Hopeful for any answer! Didnt get it from hp-chat.. he told me to "press and hold the power button to restart my computer" after i explained the issue (with clarity in mind) for 5 min, and even , mentioned pressing that button several times.

So i turn to you :) The one who can help me shall be greeeaatly rewarded

I would suggest returning it and getting a new one if you're within the return window. This problem has plagued some of my E14s.

Thanks for replying but unfortunately i dont think that will be last resort. I am in norway, bought it here, and they have crappiest hp support, if it even exists.

I also hate sending my stuff away because they come back broken.

    Any other suggestions?

Disable wifi card. Connect Envy to ethernet. Push LAN traffic.

Enable wifi card. Connect Envy to Wifi. Push LAN traffic.

If the envy doesn't freeze on the first test and does freeze on the second, there you go.

I'm not certain about HP in Norway, but if it's anything like HP in the US, you have a 21 day return window in which you can return it and buy a new one (or just talk to a customer service rep to have it replaced without the bother of a new transaction) - this wouldn't be a repair but a complete replacement. Again, I'm not sure if it's actually an option in Norway, but it's worth looking into if you can't figure out what's plaguing your Envy.

Thread doesn't suggest new drivers, but old ones.

I'm not sure if this is what you tried, but I'll post it again.
Make sure driver version reads 13.0.0.107 when you're done, and that windows update don't try to overwrite them. (it did once for me, and the system froze instantly again)
Step 2 might not even be needed.

No uninstall should be required, it will merely overwrite the old drivers.
    Lykke til :)

I followed the directions above earlier today (Installed old intel driver and disabled power management setting) and so far it hasn't frozen up again.

OK! Good for you man! I tried it and it made it freeze less frequently i believe. But it still happened. The computer even just died once and wouldnt start again. So i had to reinstall it.

Today i fetched my second Envy 17 SB, and ill report if it has the same issues. It is from the same batch so...

I Google searched "Envy 17 freezing up" and was lucky enough to come across this page. I applied the fix mentioned earlier (using the version 13 wifi drivers and disabling the power management) and lo and behold ... freeze free for three days now (and counting)!

I was totally focused on it being a heating issue with all the heat "cons" I read in reviews, but that wasn't it.

So glad that my machine humms along perfectly now. It does tend to get hot while using graphic intensive applications (gaming, streaming video, manipulating large graphics files with many layers, etc.) but I also keep an eye on the HP "CoolSense" tool and heck, I even get cool air blowing out of my system sometimes when just web surfing or doing everyday tasks.

I have the same issue. Even recovering to factory state and downgrading driver back to 13.0.0.107 for 4 days ago, my Envy 17 still froze for a few times, much less frequent but still exist. For the first time, I could run for one and a half day then rebooted the system so I thought that the freezing is gone. But it's not. It froze faster at other times. So I wonder that is it only me that the freezing still occur?

And is it really important that "disabling the power management" will do anything with this issue ? But I'll try it anyway.

Hope I'm not the only one who face this. Any suggestion?
