The Envy 17 now offers the i5-2410M as an option. Is this the old Envy design with a new SB processor or has the Envy design been refreshed too?

Old Envy design, but new hardware underneath it all.

Is there a refresh planned that will address the heat issues or does the SB processor run cool enough to make a real difference?

All looks good as far as heat goes with the new SB Envy's.

Well Sandy Bridge (Quad Core) runs cooler than the Clarksfields it replaces and HP did add a software assistant called CoolSense that manages the fan intelligently to thermal temperatures.

However, so far people that did receive the refresh model so far are saying that the thermals are tolerable, but everyone's definition of tolerable varies. At least they confirm it does seem to operate at lower temperatures than the first generation models.
