Perhaps this has already been presented, but I just noticed that the DV4t, 6t, and 7t notebooks all look to have been upgraded/updated to include DDR3 along with the Windows 7 release. Pretty nice for the power conscious I’d think. 1.5v RAM instead of 1.8v should match up well with a ā€œPā€ series chip and a LED backlit screen... not to mention a bit of a speed boost. Not the newest stuff coming, but a nice update just the same for the Intel 4 Series chipset.

Personally, I'm waiting until someone who owns an 'original' DV4/6/7/ to start claiming that because HP updated the machines to DDR3, they have been somehow cheated or screwed.

Good news - I saw this post then went and checked NewEgg and found that they now have a DV6 with a P7450, 4-gigs of DDR3 and an ATI 4650 with 1-gig. Quite an upgrade - I wound up returning a dv6-1268 (with AMD proc) because the battery life was awful with the AMD proc. Otherwise it was a great system with a very nice LED LCD.

That looks like a pretty good deal, especially with the DDR3, ATI GPU, LED display, 500GB 7200 HD, and Intel BGN WiFi. No VT-x though with the P7450 processor.... but if you don't need it... it won't matter.

Anyway, nice find. I added it to the post above as another example. Thanks :)

DDR3 does not offer a big performance difference over DDR2, anyway.

Are you sure? It depends on frequency.

DDR2 800 vs DDR3 1333 is a simple choice. Memory is important, but your system is dependant on other components too.

only if you're using multiple memory sticks

I think you're right, it's not a big performance boost. But even if it's only a small boost, it's still a boost, and the DDR3 sticks will consume about 17% less power and run a tick or two cooler doing it. Not a big deal either if you're on a brick most of the time, but could certainly prove to be beneficial for a battery dependent road warrior.

It's not worth chasing as an upgrade for sure. But if I'd just bought a new unit, and was still in my return window, I'd have to give some serious thought to doing a swap if the pricing was close.

Ah man. The DM3 with it's slim physique or a moonlight white DV4 packing an 80GB Intel SSD along with a 320GB drive... I dunno. lol.

    DM3 wins on battery/heat/looks... DV4 wins on power/speed. hmm.

The DM3 is newer tech though... DV4 doesn't even have LED or an Infinity screen. I'll probably wait it out for another 5-6 months and see where we're at. I'm hoping for a new DV4 along with the lines of the DM3 by summer.
