I just got this comp in today and after installing Aion online I logged on to a laggy frame rate. It was around 15-17 FPS consistently no matter what settings I tried and I can't figure out how to fix it. My friend was telling me he thinks the computer is trying to use the onboard Intel card rather than the ATI, could this be the case? Is there a way to make the computer use the ATI manually or something or maybe a driver update that could fixed my problem. I downloaded a driver from HPs website but that didn't seem like it helped either.

you cannot switch manually between gpu's it's the system who decides rather switching to ati or not depending on performance and graphics resources!

While the app is running, if you don't get an autowarning box that the game/applications has been associated with either the Performance or Power Saving profile, then it will auto-default to the Power Saving profile, until it senses a need to revert. That can be quite some time, so the best thing to do, if you know you haven't previously set the game to run in performance mode, is to Alt-Tab out of the game, right click on the desktop, select "configure switchable graphics", and it will bring up the CCC menu. From there, see if the .exe file is showing in the list of recent applications. If it is, change it to performance mode by clicking on it. If it's not, you will need to manually select the executable file by browsing for it's location and choosing a profile.

:) yet another thread started about switchable graphics. the mods should stash all this stuff in the large SG thread.

That seems to have fixed the problem somewhat, it at least got my fps above 17 (40fps while standing in a room with nobody around while before it stayed at 17) but my fps still seem to be on the low side compared to my Asus G73. In a similar area I'm getting 26 fps on this computer while getting 30+ on the Asus, I'd expect the frame rate on this card to be better seeing as the graphics card is presumably better. Also it seems the high performance mode doesn't do much for windowed mode. I'm thinking about just returning this laptop and buying something else if I'm really unable to actually utilize the graphics card then I don't see the point of putting it in the thing. I mean, how does the computer decide how much resources to divert to a game if its designed this way.

EDIT: I guess the differences in FPS were due to this computer being at a higher resolution than the other one.

The Asus G73 has a more powerful GPU. If your frame rate increased from 17 to 40, then the GPU has switched properly, but even the discreet card may still not be powerful enough.

Regarding how the computer decides: very, very badly. AMD has royally screwed up their switchable graphics and a lot of people are angry at them. However, this is not your current problem.

I'm not familiar with the game you're playing, but you could also try the 11.5 hotfix or 11.6 drivers. Both are unsupported by HP, but have been used by others with better performance, myself included. You'll likely see about 4 or 5 more FPS, but don't expect a huge jump. I'm not sure what G73 version you've got, but if it's the GTX460m gpu, then it is indeed slightly more powerful then the 6770m. The downside, as I'm sure you already know is that itwon't get near the battery life of the DV6T/7T, and is a tank to haul around :p

Excuse me for not even knowing "this" had a "main thread" to begin with. My original problem was relating to Aion and wondering if anyone knew a quick fix. I got my reply now, you can let the thread die, no need to post in it if you feel its unnecessary.
