    Hello,
Just got a new HP Laptop dv7t and it comes with 4 partitions on the 320gb hard drive. I need to have the Windows 7 partitions divided for my OS and programs and then a new partition for Data.

I am only allowed 4 partitions (I do not want to use dynamic disks), currently there are two hp ones, recovery and hp tools and the two win7 partitions system and os (Win 7 Prof).

What does everyone do if they want to have an additional partition, delete recovery or hp tools????

Create an Extended Partition, it can contain multiple Logical Drives.

Right now I have 4 partitions and it was my understanding that to create an extended partition I would need to create it from my last partition hp_tools.

How exactly with my current 4 partitions, system, operating system, recovery, and hp_tools can I create an extended partition. I am pretty much leaning towards creating the recovery disks and then deleting the recovery partition, but I am interested in this extended if it would meet my needs.

Hmm, if you wanted to hang onto all the utilities, you could merge the Win7 system partition with the HP_Tools partition -- the only thing that distinguishes the HP_Tools partition is the volume label.
It would take a bit of hackery in bcdedit, though, to make sure the "fix my booting" thing still works.

I have a HP Pavilion DV8 and I have the same problem (4 partitions created). I made a partition backup for all ones. If I erase last partition (HP TOOLS), then reduce os partition and move recovery partition to end of disk, I could create an extended partition and create some partitions inside extended partition. If I restore HP-TOOLS partition from backup...Will this work?
