My new laptop takes 11 minutes from switching it on and entering password to actually been able to use, any idea why? It is running vista os, and I hate it so far. :( :(

Usually caused by all the bloatware the HP likes to install with their notebooks. Read the Sticky on this forum entitled "Clean Vista Install with NO ACTIVATION" for more info.

Also read the sticky thread in the OS forum section on 'Tweaking Vista' for better performance.

IT's funny how they blame the OS first when its not even the OS..it's the bloatware...duh.

I think Vista runs ok. Last week i deleted the restore partition and did a clean install following orev's guide. I only installed the necessary drivers and software.

For anyone running HP 6510b/6710b i recommend the following drivers and software for a minimum but functional install:

    ADI SoundMax HD Audio Driver
    AuthenTec Fingerprint Driver
    Chipset Driver
    Ethernet Driver
    Intel Graphics Driver (X3100)
    Intel Pro Wireless Driver
    Modem Driver
    Synaptics Touchpad Driver
    HP Quick Launch Buttons
    HP Wireless Assistant
    HP 3D DriveGuard
HP System Default Settings (Power Plan)
    HP ProtectTools Security Manager
    HP Credential Manager for ProtectTools

I also added the following optional software:

    HP BrandIt Software (wallpapers)
    InterVideo WinDVD
    Roxio Creator Basic 9
    Roxio D2D 9

Any reasons for hating Vista? It is not the OS that is causing your problem. Vista starts up within 2.5 minutes tops on my laptop even without a clean install.

I suggest you run msconfig. Go to the startup tab and look at what programs are running when your laptop starts. Uncheck useless items that'll slow your computer down.

yeah, why is everyone hating on vista? mine is still how i got it from the store and it takes just under 1:30 seconds for a cold boot till the icons are fully loaded 7 programs are fully loaded. and if i really need to beat the time, i just keep it in hibernation mode or sleep mode while plugged in.

I've been running Vista on an old zv6005us since the day after Best Buy offered home premium and I've had absolutely no issues. Keep it clean and tweak what you want and it will work great.

pmmm, not sure what laptop you have but I just got mine a week ago and after a clean install and Vista tweaks the startup is down to 50 seconds. Mys specs are in my sig.

Tell us your specs and I'm sure others can help if I can't. If you have the computer I have, I'll be happy to tell you what exactly I did and which drivers I now have from the HP site so you can cut that start time down.

I'm so newb. I been hearing so much "clean installs." I read that sticky and it still didn't make sense. Basically what it is, you reformat it when it's new and you just install what you need(drivers, software, etc? Is that what a clean install is? lol.

How do you know you have Beta.

The sp1 was UP on Windows Vista Update page as a download.
I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago. But I'm now told it's been removed and no one else has seen this on the Windows update page.

I don't have it. But Vista BETA is available. Yeah what you have is an ACCIDENT SP1 download. Microsoft didn't intend for that to release. People have been having problems with it rebooting constantly.
Real release is mid-march and for it to be applied as windows update is April.
