as title, does anyone find that Vista is a bit flakey at shutting down? sometimes it will no problem, and sometimes it takes forever, and i get a DRIVER_WAIT_STATE_ERROR, and after some investigation it appears that windows cant "turn off" a certain piece of hardware (the sound i think) and it takes an eternity for the O/S to closedown ....

i have the very newest of drivers for everything, does anyone else have this issue?

    thanks.

Everything is working fine for me..

Somewhere around these forums there is a Vista tweaks guide. (ill try to find it)

It made my startup and shut down times much much faster.

I have had these problems on occasion, but it usually happens after a few software installs or uninstalls, Windows Update, or just having left the laptop on for days at a time.

Toryglenpboy, have you tried doing a fresh install? Then install all the newest drivers from the website? Then update Windows Vista?

It's sometimes slow to shutdown when you're using the OEM install from HP. Usually doing a clean install helps the start-up and shut-down speeds without causing hangs.

There's a registry tweak that changes how long Vista waits to terminate a service. I've not needed it, but perhaps your PC does. Google for it.

That is my issue. Sometimes, shutdown occurs normally. But most of the time If I choose shut down and close the lid, it won't. It keeps on running, until I open it up (even hours later), then it will complete the shutdown.

That could be a setting in your Power Scheme, or even a bug in your BIOS.

this is my first laptop. so how should it work when i close the lid?
should i shut down..then wait for that process to complete and then close the lid?
or should closing the lid shut it down automatically?

Yeah, you should let it shut down first, then close the lid.

By closing the lid, you are sending the pc into stand-by.

Meh, I prefer doing a hard shutdown. I just set up a power off shortcut and stuck it in the quick-launch bar. No real problems.
