    ...suck!

I was deciding between several laptops and I think I will have rule HP out of this due unacceptable displays.

There is no improvement whatsoever over previous generation of DV. I don't know yet if DV4t LED screen will be any better, but the current DV5 that I've seen at BestBuy are huge disappointment. There is just not enough brightness and viewing angles aren't that great for my purpose... As matter of fact they are identical to older DV that was sitting next to it.
I just need good outdoor type of display.

So far my only options are Sony or Fujitsu

'Tis just a matter of opinion, I'm sure. I know some who really enjoy it. I've yet to see them myself, though.

well, once you try Sony HiColor or whatever the name is, all other displays in comparison are just bland... I've also owned Fujitsu with their outdoor display and it was great. My only hope is that DV4t LED might be bright enough

Do they adversely affect battery life?

Probably, but I don't care about battery life. 90% of the time I have it plugged in.

The dv6700t screen does suck outdoors. Is there a way improve it without having to put a towel over it or anything like that?

i am not aware of any improvements other then getting specifically outdoor screen when you buy a laptop.

I am also kinda disappointed that you are paying a high price for a loaded DV5 but you don't get an option for better screen.

my wife just came back from visiting bestbuy where she saw the dv5z that had the brightview infinity. She said the colors were not as dark (faded like) compared to other laptops.

I would appreciate if some owners of dv5z could comment on the screen.

    cheers

if HP display the only display you looked at you'll be ok, but I've used Sony FZ HiColor for half a year and I can't see myself "downgrading" to DV screens.

I looked at both at BestBuy infinity & noninfinity, the only difference is the frame, they are identical, as well as identical to other DV screens. HP is probably reusing them over and over. I wonder what's nits rating on these... 200?

Well, if one wants to use his/her laptop outdoors, you should try to find a screen that is matte as opposed to a glossy one. The matte ones don't reflect the light nearly as much as glossy ones.

it's not necessarily outdoors... next time when you sit next to a window in a bright sunny day you'll remember what I said ;)

Well, yeah...in well-lit rooms, especially with a particular light source, the reflection really affects glossy screens.

I would be curious to know what's the nits rating on DV series... For instance Fujitsu rates their standard ones at 200 nits and bright ones at 450 nits. Lenovo also rates their standard ones at 200 nits. New 13" LED is at 250 nits and 17" is at 330 nits

I haven't taken my HP laptop outside and used it yet, but I love the screen on it. The color and picture on the screen is great. I haven't looked at Sony laptops yet, but I'll take a HP laptop screen over a Dell's any day. I'll have to take a look at the Sony screens soon and see how those are.

I've owned or tried various HP, Dell & Sony screens I agree that most Dell screens are not so great, but the 5 days I owned Dell XPS 1530 I was amazed at how great LG screen was.

Also, I should've mentioned that DV5s that I looked at were lacking in contrast as well.

I am not really trying to be picky I just want a good screen if I am paying almost $2k for a laptop and these new HPs are not really budget models.

I am not sure what you mean by this - I just bought the dv5z for $650 - that is pretty budget for me.

My brand new display, put on last Friday, 7-11-08, went what I call "weird" today. There are vertical lines in the color parts. I have an HP dv8380us and I use the media edition set-up with dark blue tool bar on top and bottom. Right now they are striped with blue, purple, light green and dark green (horizontally) from top to bottom of the toolbars. My videos and pictures are ghostly. What is the fix? Thanks! PS: I may also be a frustrated HP customer if this does not get resolved and I cannot believe something like this can go wrong so quickly.
