man, why is HP so much slower than everyone else? has anyone heard anything about when the new home/pavilion notebooks are going to come out? the 8230 looks slick, but i'm not all about paying business prices (especially w/o brightview).

I'm seriously considering an HP nc8230. My only concern is that it doesn't feature an ExpressCard slot. I don't want to get this notebook and then see them release a similar model with ExpressCard two months later.

Then again, is ther ereally that much benefit to having this type of slot?

Some models of the nc8230 have express card slot.
The top of the line model goes for $2600, it would be good if they could have education pricing on these, cause i'm tempted but $2600 and it does not even come with a dvd burner, i'd be willing to try the acer 8100.
The workstation model nw8240'sprobably gonna pump the roof at +$3000 .
IBM has education pricing on their thinkpad T4x series, i can't understand why HP does not have any education pricing on their business line, students need stuff like that.
found this link on x1000forums: http://h71016.www7.hp.com/ctoBases.asp?oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=&ProductLineId=430&FamilyId=2075&LowBaseId=10310&LowPrice=$1,654.00

It looks like they are gonna be around in march, no configurable model yet though.

Only the docking station has the ExpressCard slot. I don't think ExpressCard is a big deal. The only thing that would annoy me is if they came up with a wireless ExpressCard to use on cellular networks like Verizon and AT&T and it didn't come in PCMCIA.

I don't see myself receiving HDTV broadcasts or backing up huge amounts of data that would necessitate requiring a notebook with ExpressCard. Should some incredible ExpressCard application come out, I suppose I'll have to eat my words and look for a new notebook.

I'm going to get the nc8230. I really wanted the nc6230 because of its small size, but it doesn't come with integrated firewire. But, the nc8230 gets much better battery life and isn't much bigger or heavier.

sorry for the confusion about express card, i was thinking smart card actually when i read express card ...
right those 8000 series don'e have it.not sure if it's taht big of a deal though. The nc8230 seems nice but i thinks they should have added a model with mobility x700, the nw8240 has the mobility fireGL v5000, but what about the enthousiast that does not need fireGL 'specifications'. those new notebooks are promising though, i can't wait for a hand on review of the nc8230 or nw8240.

Well, I don't know how much this helps but PC Magazine has an nc8230 review. It beat out the Dell D810 and got Editors' Choice.

I placed an order of NC6120 at pcnation.com this Tuesday (PR125UA#ABA, $1268.98 free shipping). Note that HP currently has a mailin rebate promotion of $50. The estimated delivered date is Friday, let's see what will happen.[ :)]

4 hours and 53 minutes battery life... hummm, there - the reason why i should pick this over the acer 8100 - that's good news. good replacement for the x1000 which was in my opnion the best non pro notebook out there.

At least one vendor saying they'll have the nc8230 in stock 2/25.

Still haven't heard anything on when hp's new home line is going to come out...
