Like many other people on these forums, I am in the dilemma of waiting for Santa Rosa to be released or to buy now. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what HP has in store for the new santa rosa chip set and how long I would have to wait to get my hands on a machine with that config.
Thanks

My Magic 8-Ball says, "Better not tell you now."
Really, anything you hear about this is pure speculation. "Intel's next-gen PC platform, ‘Santa Rosa’, ready for May launch" from apcmag.com
I expect & hope for an HP "refresh" by the end of May. Unrealistic? -

I think the 8510 info might be wrong...there is no such thing as a 15.4" laptop with a X1900 graphics card...at least one that doesn't melt itself upon delivery.
But it does appear like the nc8430 is finally going to be outdated... -
The specs are all speculative, yes, but the 8510w, 8510p, 8710w and 8710p are four different notebooks that will hit -- only thing we know is the 8510 will be 15.4" and 8710 will be 17" and of course are Intel Santa Rosa platform notebooks.

I'm getting one of the 17" ones, any ideas when they'll be released?
-
Oh nevermind May 9th, just a few days after my birthday. Totally rad. I will have a notebook for Barcamp.
-
I would wait for Santa Rosa for sure. Faster FSB=800MHz, supports Hybrid HDD's, new chipset, and a couple of nice things I can't remember. You are just to close to it's release to buy the old platform IMHO. Santa Rose is Intel's whole new upgrade the the Centrino platform.. I think they will call it Centrino Pro.

The pics look exactly like the nc8430. Would make sense they keep the case the same as it is really works.
-
Does none of the older notebooks support hybrid hard drives? For instance the DV9000 series?
-
All notebook support hybrid hard drives. There is no need for the notebook to have a Santa Rosa chipset. However, Santa Rosa has flash built into the motherboard, so there is less need for a hybrid hard drive.
-
I remember reading somewhere that on the Santa Rosa platform, you have to choose between onboard NAND cache module (Robson?) or the hybrid HDD but not both.
-
Currently, that appears to be correct. The limitation is that Vista's SuperFetch feature only allows for one flash memory device (be it a ReadyBoost device, Sata Rosa's motherboard NAND, or a ReadyDrvie hybrid hard drive). I imagine as the devices become more common, Microsoft will release an update for Vista (maybe sp1) to allow multiple devices to be utilized at the same time.

Wonder why that is? The readyboost doesnt really work like the hybrid hard drives will.
