For those that are interested there is a new driver update for the NVIDIA 8400M GS via Microsoft Update/Windows Update.. Version 7.15.11.129 (previous version by HP was 7.15.11.123)

I installed the new one and then ran the W.E.I benchmark and my "Graphics" rating increased by .2 to 3.3 (previous was 3.1):

You should use some other benchmark besides the WEI score as it is more synthetic than most. If you only depend on it for Aero it should be fine, but don't depend on it for a prediction of your gaming performance.

That so called "new" driver that MS suggests for update is not a new driver at all, in fact it is a nVidia 101.xx, so if you want to have latest drivers go to the laptops2go
Just for example, with this driver STALKER is between 25 and 35 fps
with 158.xx the fps is 35-45, so you can all see the difference.

you can get .2 or more different in the numbers just rerunning the test without making any changes

What's the best overall driver to use for the 8400M GS at laptops2go (I know that question is frowned upon, but I can't think of a better way to put it)?

There aren't any that are better than the official ones that came with your laptop at the moment.
