Engadget have the full story here.

The new DV7 borrows a lot of elements from the Envy line and God it looks so sexy dressed in black!!

If they finally added 1080p monitor along with the ATI 6850 (like the upcoming Envy) I will most likely go with that one besides the upcoming Envy 17 3D SB.

1080 and a nice video card = buy for me. Does the DV7 have the capability to use 2 2.5'' drives?

Um, I almost cried when I heard about this. I've been trying to decide on a laptop for so long now and then I see this. I think I've made my decision.

Basically, I wanted the old dv6 but the lack of USB 3.0 and the crappy touchpad made me hold back. Now that they've fixed both of my main issues (and it has 4 speakers for crying out loud!) I think I actually officially want it (only time will tell!)

I wonder if it will still be available with a touchscreen? Because I really liked that option on the old dv6...

That would be AMAZING. So excited bout the USB 3.0 and IF they throw in a true HD display it will be very hard for me to justify spending the extra money on the Envy 17....

I mean depending on what they add in the new SB Envy 17 it seems at this point that you're only paying for the design and name.

Somethings that I am trying to figure out but not seeing. Will these have backlit keyboards and full HD 1080p screens?

ARGH! I just bought an ENVY 14 with radiance, but if the DV6 has full hd, I've gotta sell it.

I really doubt that HP will put the ATI 6850m into these. I would think they would save that for the Envy 17.

Now I am glad that HP canceled my order last week. :) Now I get to wait for the NEW dv7.

Well, the base model isn't going to have a backlit keyboard. I can't imagine with a laptop with that many options that they don't have a backlit keyboard option; that's just kind of a given these days (not to mention the lack of one is a dealbreaker for me) :\

Has anyone heard anything about an FHD screen? I would assume that at least the dv6 won't have one unless they say it will.

    Sweet....
    Soooooo sweet....

I just emailed HP to get their return policy in writing. I would love to go from an 1st gen i5 dv6, to a 2nd gen i7 dv6, to a 2nd gen i7 dv7 with backlit keyboard in the span of 3 months.

A new mouspad and updated screen will fix everything that is wrong with the current model.

However...I have to ask.... If this is the new dv7....what is the point of buying an Envy 17 (non-hd)? Maybe the screen will not be updated : (

I really hope the DV6/7 have the sub high end AMD GPU (6700M-6800M series) as options. Also high resolution 1600x900. If it's just the same old 1366x768 screen, then it's a deal breaker for me.

One thing I would like to see is to offer dual band (2.5 and 5gig)wifi module.... most of the newer laptops have this... the current HP DV6 and DV7 do not (yet oddly the DV6 part list has a (2.5/5gig)wifi module on it)

just my take, but I don't expect to see a FHD display on a DV. this is a spendy LED panel which I think will be reserved for the Envy line where it can be paired with a serious GP that is capable of fully utilizing it.

Funny thing about the dual band cards for dv6 line, they were offered in the 2nd generation or older.

The HP press release mentions Beats Audio and "HD" displays which, for HP, means 1600x900, not 1080p

The HP press release says no. The "HD BrightView display" is a 1600x900.

For sake of Clarity, when HP says "HD" or "HD+" they mean 1600x900. "FHD" (full HD) means 1080p.

Atleast they must add full HD display as an option, as its compitants have.
have they added switchable graphics as all sb pros support

To keep the costs down I'd suggest they won't, but I agree market pressure is a powerful thing :D . Even to offer this as an option requires an additional expense of configuring the mfg line, testing, etc. have you confirmed that competitors offer 1080p at this same price point?

That said, the AMD graphics card itself supports switchable graphics, so we can only hope that HP will take advantage of it

As here in india dell offers 1080p with a premium of approx. 100 dollars over the similarly spec.d xps 15 also sony eb series, but if they add a full hd display i bet most of them will opt for full hd screen even if there is a 100 dollar premium over the hd screen, just as on case of envy 14 900p vs 720p .

This appears to be an HP Europe article. The May date must be for the release in Europe and not the US. (I hope)... got my dv7 order canceled last week so now I am patiently waiting for this new model.

Hopefully the cooling in the new Dv6 series makes the laptop at least somewhat decent at exhausting it's ungodly heat buildup.

I have been studying the photos and videos I have seen from various sources.

I am almost certain, there is a greater area for air to exhaust from the left hand side.

There is a 8 slotted vent on the back edge to the unit, and is likley an air intake. From the videos, I can see the air intake underneth the laptop has been completely removed, when compared with the older DV6 and older gen latops. This can only mean, the design of new back vented area is for cool sense function / feature, so when used on lap the vent holes are not covered, therefore can still draw in air to maintain cooling. My quess the software will throttle the CPU, or low the mutlipier to reduce heat even further.

If the internal heat pipes and heat sink are larger, and a slightly large fan is in the unit? This will surely help.

I am only guessing from observations. I do think that I may have guessed something at least right. In any case, the cooling system is got to be better :) (fingers crossed)

yes you are spot on -- this is exactly what CoolSense is: removal of the vents from the bottom; drawing air in from the side, and perhaps other internal changes, plus HP thermal assistant software to help manage airflow to best fit the task.

Well that's good news for those who're planning on buying. I think a good dollop of arctic silver 5 on the chips will also help tons..i'm sure that's what HP did to mine when I sent it in for repairs, just reapplied thermal paste.

A little bit more quality control and HP would be on top of their game, imo.

    it didn't.
it might have shaved off about 2C on average. with top temperature about the same after 1 hour of stress testing.

Oh? I suppose it depends on how well the stock paste was applied...mine I can only assume was put on so badly that it caused my high temperatures, eventually making the paste useless and thus causing near-shutdown temps.

they do have thermal compounds there already. i'm not sure if it's arctic silver 5 (as i've never seen it dried), but it is greyish. mediocrely applied - but it isn't too much worse than if you did it yourself.

the GPU isn't even connected to the heatsink in anyway however - but it doesn't get much higher than low 70s even when running furmark overclocked... so i guess it's fine.

Correct.. it is applied to the heatsink by the heatsink vendor and then shipped to the factory.

    oh i see.

oh a separate note, thermal compound doesn't seem to be enough here - hope the new revision does a better job at cooling. my CPU can go up to 94C after some serious prime95 or starcraft 2.

Also, has there been any word about a backlit keyboard? Someone expressed concern about that earlier and close-ups of the keyboard really don't seem to have a space for a backlit keyboard button like the previous dv6... :\

Considering this Preview Video of Dv6 for the Last year. I guess we won't be having any Touchscreen Option. :(

Backlit keyboard would be there, considering they are providing backlit touchpads. It's still my speculation though!

No touchscreen? Bummer.....but that is OK....
The more I use the computer, the less I use the touchscreen.

Looks like I may jump to a DV7...just to get a better screen.....especially if the 7 has a back-lit keyboard.

Nice, GDDR5 is going to be real nice.

According to NotebookCheck, the 6600 series is actually ranked lower than the 6500 series. Not sure how that happened. Anyways, I hope it's the 6700 series, but that still doesn't compare well against the GT 555M found in the Lenovo Y470/570.. decisions decisions.
