Hi everyone,
I just got my new notebook which is a 17.3" Pavillion G7 (2011 series).
I believe something is going wrong with the CPU fan which sometimes whistles at inconstant intervals and drives me crazy when working in a silent room.
I'm starting this thread hoping that other Pavilion G7 and G6 users can tell me whether they hear a similar noise. (I think G6 series has the same hardware with G7, but smaller screen and case)
I also recorded the whistling noise. You can download it from the link below (very small mp3 file). Look for the inconstant whistling noise in addition to the normal noise of the fan.
Actually I sent my laptop to HP service center yesterday and it is now being tested. However, the first comment of the technician was that the whistling noise could be normal for G7 series and even if they replace the notebook with a new one, the whistling noise would probably remain the same. I really don't believe he is right. I have been using HP notebooks since 8-9 years and I've never had a similar problem.
Many thanks in advance for your helps.

I really appreciate if any Pavilion users can tell me whether they hear the same whistling noise.
Because tomorrow I will have the response from HP service center and if they decide not to replace the notebook, I better have something to say based on your experiences. -
I purchased a 2011 model (not certain specifically of the exact model number) G6 for my boy, 6 months ago. Brand new. He brings it with him when he visits and I have not ever heard any sort of "whistling" from the fan. He is a heavy smoker as well (already quite abit of ash built up on it) which I would have thought might cause a few problems circulation-wise. But no - it performs very smoothly. Quiet.
Don't settle for any tech's pathetic excuse. Maybe it's not going to be or is not supposed to be whisper-silent, but this fan is, sure as sin, not supposed to sing either, IMO. -
@Izagaia, thanks for your comments.
HP just confirmed RMA, but I don't know if they really considered it defective or if it is the result of my insistence and customer satisfaction policy.
Anyway, I will let you know whether the new one will have the same issue, I hope not... -
Just purchased a g7-1260US and it has a very annoying whirling noise that increases and decreases constantly...and like you said, in a quiet room, will drive you bananas.
If it was the constant fan noise, it wouldn't be so bad.
I've had several notebooks and none have distracted me so much.
I emailed hp and they gave me all kinds of Windows power settings to try and BIOS updates...all of which I have tried...I think it is an engineering flaw or something.
I hope others find this thread. -
@iamghostman
Can you please record the noise and give me a link ?
By the way, I'm now copying my files into the new G7-1210 and I have to say that I still hear a whistling noise, but it's less noticeable compared to the replaced notebook. I will give a try hoping that I can manage to ignore it after a while.
On the other hand, I have also tried replacing the stock hdd (WD Scorpio Blue) with a 500GB 7200rpm WD Scorpio Black. But, Scorpio Black resulted too much vibration and noise. So, I decided to buy an SSD and keep the stock hdd as a storage disc. Of course I will have to buy a hdd caddy and install it instead of the dvd-rw. -

I just recorded it with the windows sound recorder using the built-in mic. It picks up all the background noise, but if you turn it up you can here a pitch higher than the backround noise fading in and out. Drives me nuts! -
But is it really as loud as I hear when I listen to your recording ? Even my replaced G7 was not that noisy and you are saying that you recorded it with the built-in mic (I had recorded with Iphone approaching its mic a few cm. away from the fan)
Today I have started to use G7 as my primary notebook. To be honest, the noise is still there, but it becomes hearable very rarely and it is not loud at all.
Moreover, I'm sure it comes from the fan. Because when I switch between "high performance" and "power saver" plans, sometimes I notice an instant fan speed increase for a short time and during this increase the noise becomes much louder for a few seconds, then almost disappears when the fan is running at normal speeed. -
@iamghostman
Have you found a solution to eliminate the whining noise ? Have you had your nb replaced ? -
just bought a g6 (last week) from pc world to replace a dead toshiba mine makes the same noise phoned pc world they said it "could" be normal or i could take it back. my old toshiba only used its fan when it got really hot this is singing away all the time. what fan life can we expect?
-
HP technician had told me that he was sure such a noise would not increase in the future. but now I'm seriously considering returning my g7 for good as it seems this noise is a chronic issue for G6 and G7 series.

not sure what to do other than the whistle its a great lap top fast and surprsingly good for games i guess we might get to live with it i was born in the country then moved to town on a main road at uni the traffic noise drove me crazy but after a few months l did not notice it at all!

fan stils whistles but hey ho runs elder scrolls skyrim on high settings sweet as a nut

Fan whistle is usually caused by a lack of lubricant which in time will toast the fan motor. If it whistles you should get a replacement fan of the same specificaton as the old one. If your unit is under warranty your'e in good shape because the work required to replace a $35 fan on a G7 involves removing the mainboard. If the issue is not corrected you will run the risk of a cooked hard drive and/or system board. Most cpus are hardy things and have the ability to turn themselves off when they get too hot but the other components can fry in no time. As Peggy Bundy once said, "The engine seized? I know the red light came on but it didn't get any brighter"
-
After all the research I've done on this subject, I'm quite convinced that this issue is present or very likely to come up any moment on all G6 and G7 series notebooks.
My unit was purchased only a few months ago and it has warranty of 2 years. I'm considering to drop it off to a service center for part replacement, but it may take some time as I need to set up a spare laptop. But I will eventually keep you posted with the results. -
Hello!
Same problem with me. I own G7 for about 3 months and that noise is killing me. I don't know what to do.
It starts to whistle then stops for about 10 seconds and than mmmmrrrrrrrrmmmmmmm.... Any results? -
My new laptop (Chronos 7) is exceptionally silent. Usually the hdd is making more noise than the fans. This is what you get when you pay the double -
This post may be a late late but I have solved this issue. Do you remember when you would place a playing card in you bike spoke to make a "cool" noise when riding? Well the issue is the same principle here.
HP has placed a sticker on the underside of the power switch ribbon cable. Over time dust builds up on the sticky side of the sticker and it starts to peel off, and drops into the fan blades which creates the now "uncool" noise.
Solution: Teardown the G7 to the keyboard, remove the keyboard, and then peel off the sticker from the power button ribbon cable - then reassemble - now all is quite on the HP G7 front again...
New Pavilion G7 whistling fan (any G7 or G6 users ?)
