Can you just use Microsoft Update so it's automatically installed?

I installed it and absolutely no problems so far, even was able to update the video drivers for my 8600gs which I couldn't do before due to getting the black screen glitch.

Actually these patches wont' be available to the general public until 8/14, as to follow Microsoft's monthly update cycle. So, grab them while they are still hot, and get it done with. :D

BF2 wont work? What version of Vista do you have? Works fine for me on a Desktop box.

Kanehi's observation always makes me suspect of Windows Updates.

Right now everything works on my DV9500t.

Why would I want to update???? Looking at the descriptions of what problems that the updates solve, nothing applies. I'd sure hate to have something like my battery icon disappear, like Kanehi's did.

I'm looking for an update that will solve my poor mic gain issue. That's one I'll gladly update for.

Playing around a little bit more i figured out that BF2 does indeed work, except not on the laptop monitor. I have to plug into a different monitor (VGA) to make it work. its hecka lame.

I got my battery icon back and the volume icon too, bigspin gave me instructions on how to re-enable it. I used the Vx64 update. So far so good. The battery life seems to last a little bit longer and I also noticed the fan doesn't come on as often and when it does, not at full blast! Thanks for the headsup. Microsoft states SP1 for Vista is coming out but failed to say when. Hope we're not the guinea pigs with these patches and they're lurking to see our reaction.

These are the final releases for these patches -- what you'll get automatically on 8/14 will be the exact same patch. Microsoft just likes to bundle them together once a month so normal, non-obsessive computer users aren't downloading patches every two days.

And apparently they're identical to the beta patches that circulated last week -- so much that the official releases won't even install if you've already loaded the betas.

So far, these patches have been a slight improvement for me, too. I get a slightly faster boot time now, especially in the time from the login screen to the desktop. One downside is that Sidebar seems to take even longer to load now for some reason.

    What Cogitatus said is correct.

I was able to get these Updates back on 7/30. I installed them at that time and have seen a nice overall improvement with my system. The versions I got 10 days ago are the same ones that have just been released. I have seen the md5 hash comparisons and they are the same.

I downloaded and installed both updates: they were from the Microsoft webiste, genuine software verified, installed without a hitch, etc.

But when I restarted the computer, the Vista OS didn't boot up; I got stuck in a MS-DOS like console with the following prompts:

    Booting 'Windows VIsta'

    acpi
    Vista Loader 2.1.2

    ACPI: Reclaim Memory not found!
    Done!
    fallback1
    find --set-root /bootmgr

    Error 17: File not found
    Booting 'Windows NT/2000/XP'

    fallback 2
    find --set-root /ntldr

    Error 17: File not found
    Booting 'Enter Command Line'

Boot failed! Press any key to enter command line

After that I get taken to a menu where I can alter the boot order or other boot setup options, but I haven't changed anything since I don't know how. Rebooting the notebook does not solve this problem. I do have a set of recovery discs, but would like to avoid doing a complete restore as much as possible (I have documents on the hard drive that aren't on the recovery discs.)

The notebook was working great until applying the two Vista updates. Can anyone please help me with some suggestions or solutions? :(

do a restore point before update and install each one at a time and restart each time and see if it works. Also do it in safe mode.

Thanks for your reply, Velocity, but isn't you advice a bit late? How can I do a restore point before an update when I can't even boot into Vista at this point?

Also, how can I boot into safe mode given the computer can't find the boot file to begin with?

    Thanks

Use safe mode to boot in. It might take awhile to boot into.

Assuming I can boot into Vista safe mode, what should I do next? Is there any way to "undo" the two updates I installed that seem to have caused this problem in the first place?

Is there a "last known good configuration" I could boot into that's similar to Windows XP? Would doing so undo the two VIsta updates?

    Thanks again.

You can try I system restore. It will take you back before the updates. I actually had to do this for my cousin a few days ago.

So to start > all programs > accessories > system tools> system restore. The instructions are pretty self explanatory.

Well, I didn't read this whole thread -- just the few posts, and now this, as I saw folks were having problems after the update and I see from the most recent folks are STILL having to do a system restore -- ACK!

My dv9500t SHIPPED Aug. 9, so I'm HOPING it already HAS all the latest... as for the updates, I think I'll just set it up with HP's automatic update system, and Windows Automatic Updates, and let that be that... Seems doing these MANUAL UPDATES always leads to trouble.

after you boot in safe mode go to system restore and pick one of the dates before the patch took place then it should be fine.

If you want to delete the updates just go to control panel/programs and features/view installed updates and delete from there.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Again, I cannot boot into Windows Vista, so I cannot access the control panel to delete the updates.

I also cannot boot into safe mode... pressing, holding, and tapping the F8 key does nothing... the grub console still gives me the same error messages (i.e. boot file not found) and Vista does not start. There is nothing wrong with the F8 key as other keys such as Esc, F10, and F11 work fine and take me to various boot setup screens, none of which seem to contain solutions to my problem.

I did manage to start Windows Restore Point Manager by loading in my recovery discs. I selected to restore to a point before I installed the two updates, but even after doing this, Vista did not boot at restart. That's right, restoring to the point before installing the two updates did not solve my problem.

I noticed that when I chose which drive to restore, it automatically chose my C: drive (which contains my system files) but would not let me select my X: drive (which I presume stores my boot files.) I checked each restore point available (there were 20+) and none of them allowed me to restore my X: drive.

Could it be that when I use any restore point it does not restore my boot file, which is the original source of the problem? If so, how can I fix this?

Thanks, and I appreciate your help.

I am getting a new laptop in a few days, when it arrives do you suggest i install the updates or just leave it?

I heard that it is possible the updates can reduce fan noise which is what some people are mentioning about HP DV6500t. Any suggestions? thanks

It's a good idea to install it given the positive feedbacks on the patches.

The boot file must've been corrupted. Had that happen to me before and had to do a clean install. Could've loaded a program with a virus. If you do an f11 recovery, the personal files are not deleted. If you do a recovery disc install it will wipe out the HD.

Really, weak in what context? The updates improved the performance on my 9500 running on x64 and I had no problems with the install at all...
