Hey folks. Haven't really hung out in the HP forum too much so hello to everyone. Just saw the post on Gizmodo about HP's next dv6 laptops with aluminum body (similar to the Envy line). Link.

Edit: Here's the Engadget post with lots of pictures!

Anyone know anything about release dates? I've been looking at the Acer 3820TG but could wait for this laptop if it comes out in the next couple of month. And who knows when that Acer is going to come to North America...if it does at all.

Edit: Looks like it will be available for purchase directly from HP on May 19th. (I hope it comes to Canada not too long after that)

    EDIT:
    Preliminary Specs: dm4/dv5/dv6/dv7
Display: LED-backlit HD display (with optional multitouch display, dv6 only?)
CPU: Intel Pentium to Intel Core Processor
HDD: up to 1TB of storage (640GB for dm4)
    Ports: VGA, eSATA, HDMI, USB
Graphics: Integrated or ATI discrete (entry and performance). No info about whether it is switchable.
Audio: Dolby Advanced Audio and Altec Lansing speakers (Beats available for dv7)
Colors: Black cherry, champagne and Sonoma red imprint finishes
Others: Fingerprint reader, imprint finish on aluminum (dv6 only?), Blu-Ray
Battery life: dm4 will get around 6.5hrs according to press release. No info on dv5/6/7

dv6 (AMD) starts at $530, and dv6 (Intel) starts at $650.

Post any information you know!

These have been in Australia for quite some time already (a few weeks)

    One of the DV6's I'm looking at getting is a Core i7 720QM, 6GB Ram, ATI 5650.

Just need info re: battery life.

Oh man, NBR or Notebookcheck needs to get a sample of this laptop ASAP so I can find out about battery life, graphics performance, heat, screen quality, everything!

Very nice! The only thing missing here is the expansion port 3 for a docking station. Nice new look and touch screen feature. I like how they got rid of the touch buttons on top, those are too easy to accidently hit.

The dv6 is so sexy, I really hope it gets some kind of switchable graphics. Doesn't have to be Optimus level, a manual switch will do just fine for me.

Blah. None of the videos are looking at the dv7 enough to confirm Crossfire.

Might just be Hybrid Graphics to Crossfire the AMD IGP with the discrete GPU.

Do you guys think crossfire is possible with Intel graphics + ATI discrete? Probably not right? I'm guessing the AMD version of the dv7 might have real crossfire between an integrated and a discrete ATI card. It would also be cool if they could allow switchable graphics so that there are two options: Integrated only (for battery), crossfire (for performance)

Hybrid Crossfire (where both integrated and discrete GPUs work together for increased performance) with an Intel IGP and ATI discrete is not possible but switchable graphics between those two should be.

With the AMD IGP+GPU you'd get something along the lines of Nvidia Optimus as well as a graphics performance boost. How big a boost I don't know.

Real Crossfire though is two discrete GPUs like the Mob. HD5870 working together...and that's supported by both Intel and AMD chipsets.

Hmmm, I guess I'll have to wait and see the details to decide which (AMD or Intel) I'm going to go with.

What's up with these not having any sort of expansions slot? I realize the expresscard slot isn't used often, but given that these don't have USB3, it will be necessary pretty soon.

Totally agree. If I buy this laptop, it will be at least 2 to 3 years before I consider getting a new computer so an expresscard slot would have been super useful. It's really sad to see the disappearance of the expansion slots in recent computers, even my current laptop has one! What gives?

i personally, like the current dv6 (moonlight not espresso). This one loses the expansion slot which I am sure I'll probably never use but i like the little remote that comes with it. That wont be possible with this one. Also they take away the number pad on the dv6 which i know a few people are not a fan of, but i like it. lastly it would've been nice to see HP do something original and not try to follow apple (NO, I am not a fanboy!). It's pretty clear when you look at the design with the large track pad and metal finish. Well bottom line: R.I.P. mini media remote :(

Wow, I may look at this instead of the Envy. I mean if I can get the dv6 and customize from there and the DV6 starts way cheaper than the Envy 15... whats the point in getting the Envy (whats the difference if you can customize either anyway)? DV6 and others look sharp, just a clean non-cluttered look. I've been waiting for years for a pc company to finally start making aluminum construction laptops like Mac... thank you hp.

Anybody gotten any info on the screen resolution options on the new dv5/6/7? I am really hoping the dv5/6 will have something better than 1368x768 offered. I'm also hoping the dv7 will have 1080p at least.

Don't expect the DV7 to be an m17 killer, that's what the Envy 17 is for, The dv and dm series are mid range average power laptops. If they have more powerful components, then how do we differentiate the lines?

Envy 17 isn't a direct M17x competitor unless it gets a second GPU...though it is a solid competitor in the single GPU notebook market against the M15x, the single GPU Clevos, the ASUS G73 and the MSI GX640/740. Single GPU notebooks and dual GPU notebooks aren't in the exact same market segment and anyone satisfied by a single GPU's gaming power was shopping in the wrong isle if they were looking at an M17x.

Reports of the dv7 includes mention of "crossfire" and "high-end GPU" but there's no details yet on what that means exactly. When we get those details we'll know how it's different than the Envy 17 and how/if it matches up to the M17x.
