Well, I finally just ended my dilemma and ordered the new dv8000t in the following configuration:

    HP Pavilion dv8000t CTO NB
    - Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2500 (2.0 GHz)
    - 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Wide Viewing (1680x1050)
    - 128MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
    - 512MB DDR2 SDRAM (2x256MB)
    - 80 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
    - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
    - 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

(will be bumping to 2gig DDR2 533 from newegg in a month)

Have been debating which notebook to buy for a few months it seems, and with the talks of how good the core duo is, I figured I'd just go this route, and hope for the best.

    Now what I'm wondering, is:

    1. Anyone have a suggestion for a case? the HP case was so blah, I figured someone here would have a better suggestion.

    2. I'll post pics/review when I get it, (hopefully in 2 weeks...) and run some 3d mark tests. (have never done those before, anyone has a good primer on how to do so, I'll be happy to put up the figures)

    3. Wondering if everyone is in agreement in using Omega Nvidia drivers? I'm not going to do alot of gaming, maybe Civ4 when I have time, but will be doing video editing, photoshop, wmv9 hd and so forth. Want to make sure I have drivers that won't slow me down.

    4. Also wondering if anyone has any takes on how good the nvidia 7400 is in comparison to the x1400 ati? (posted this yesterday, but received no responses)

    5. will likely start with a fresh xp pro install on the unit, but noting other posts from other products, I'll try and run tests before I reformat, and after, for comparisons.

Thanks for the input, this forum finally steered me in the right direction, and appreciate any direction on the above as well.

Anxiously awaiting my 8000t.... don't suppose you can pay anyone at hp to build it faster?

The dual core dv8000 should be much, much cooler than the zd8000.

That would be my feeling for it as well. Should run very cool. One of my friends has a dv8000 with a turion ml-37. And it gets pretty warm. Hopefully the dual core runs cooler...
