My granddaughter got a new hp laptop, Pavilion dv4-1125nr, Vista et al for Christmas.

By connecting ethernet cable from dsl modem to laptop and open Internet Explorer it connects just fine.

Then we put ethernet into Belkin wireless router the laptop connects with 4 bars and says "Connected". Open Internet Explorer and no internet.

Impossible to use hp 800 support as full of post Christmas problems. Any suggestions? Need more information? Would another forum be helpful?

    Thanks for any replies.
    Brad

does any error message show up?

and if you look at the connection details in the network connections overview: what is the connection state, are you able to obtain IP address when connecting via the belkin router?

you may also need to change the tcp/ip protocol configuration in the wireless connection settings.

Sounds like a router configuration issue. You should be able to log into the router's internal webserver (and change the admin password, enable security, etc). You may need to cold boot the DSL modem so it'll recognize the router's MAC address rather than your laptop's.

I'd check to see if your anti-virus software is blocking it, I can't see it being a connectivity issue rather an access issue, because if your laptop and router weren't seeing each other it wouldn't say connected.

Thanks for the replies. I'll get the info mentioned when we travel to her house which is 40 miles away.

Using the wireless router, the laptop network icon in the system tray says "Connected" and is green in color. Using the troubleshoot screen also says "Connected". We then open Internet Explorer and we are not on the internet.

I thought we needed to add some settings in Interent Explorer/Tools/Internet Options but it connected automatically to the internet when we plugged the ethernet cable into the laptop.

I was hoping for a quick fix but this stuffs not easy.
    Thanks again, Brad

When you plug the cable in the laptop "kind of" figures you the owner are connecting to the net, but with wifi some A~V software needs to be told to allow this access because it doesn't know who is trying to access your laptop, because it could be a hacker, I've had this problem arise in the past.

...and just in case, also look if the IE is not in offline mode. most probably it's not... but as you describe it (connection pretends to be okay), it *could* be that. :)

and, when you're at that computer, also try if other applications (like some other browser, icq, skype, whatever) can access internet - i mean, if it's only IE what's affected, or everything.

could be worth checking the settings in IE. check its using the WIFI connection as default and not still trying to connect over the ethernet cable thats not there.
