    Hi all,

I really like the design of the dv series, I need the 10 key number pad built in and a 17 inch screen. I was about to buy the dv8000z but the graphics chipset just won't cut it. I was wondering if any HP people know of a replacement to the dv8000 with the p4, maybe a dual core system or something coming up and a better graphics chipset. If not i'll buy now, but I can wait a month or 2 . .thanks in advance . .

You want a DV8000z with a P4? The ZD8000 should work. It has the ATi X600. Why anyone would want a P4 in a laptop? I have no idea.

Also, if you want an AMD Turion and better graphics, try the MSI MS-1036. It has a 256MB X700. You have to build it yourself, unless you order from some retailers...

What i meant was. I have no interest in buying a laptop with a p4 desktop chip slapped in a laptop (dv8000) I want to know if it is going to be replaced with the yonah pentium M and some type of decent graphics.

    Thanks

regarding msi I dont think I would buy a laptop from a company with out a long history of building laptops. I know they make godo mobo's etc,

What's wrong with a P4 in a laptop? Yeah, the brick is large and goes a little north of warm, and the chorus sung by the three fans sometimes draws a little attention, but the unit works just fine. Battery time is below what it should be, but I mainly use it as a desktop replacement,... meaning it rarely goes anywhere with me. Fact is, I think it's noticeably quicker than the dv. I own both, the zd and the dv, and I'm pleased with both. Tell ya what, when I do Photoshop and/or Quark, and I use them a lot, the zd stomps all over the dv. Not sure if it's because of the P4, a stronger graphics component, or a combination of the two. But trust me, I've tried them both and in some tasks, it's no contest. But I will admit, when I walk out da door, it's almost always with the dv.

Oh yeah, the zd is almost a full pound heavier and a little over a 1/4 inch thicker then the dv also. But still, the zd still has a role, and there are some things the more attractive dv just has a little trouble keeping up.

P4s put out much more heat than a P-M or Turion CPU or even an AMD Athlon 64 solution does. Also a top of the line P4 could not outperform a top of the line P-M or Turion CPU - mobile CPUs are much more efficient per clock cycle than the P4 is.

Oh yeah, you're right on the heat issue. My zd does run a little warmer than my dv, but in my case, not that much more than the dv. I mean, it's not alarming to me. Now the brick gets hot, sometimes I think you could fry an egg on it. And after sitting at the machine for a few minutes, the fans tend to blend in with all the other ambient noises around me, so the fan noise is not to me a major factor or a point of distraction. But when it comes to performance, this thing is a cruncher folks. I zip through PS filters in almost half the time it takes that progress bar to go from left to right on the dv. So while the Turion may be more efficient, this P4 ain't no slack either. When I look at my two laptops, I see Horsepower in the dv and torque in the zd. With neither of them being a dissappointment. But I gotta say again, the dv looks way better than the zd,... the blue numlock and caplock lights are striking and the shiny black interior kinda reminds you of a Qosmio.

Just make sure you have plenty of clearance UNDER the unit and you should be fine with the heating problem. Keep a listen for the center fan. If it seems to be overactive, then it's probably having problems managing the heating. The right and left fans should be on almost all the time. And never do your computer with the zd sitting on the bed, ottoman or any other soft surface that will swallow up the bottom. Your air intakes are on the bottom.

Agreed. Heres a good example on PM vs. P4. A 2.26ghz PM is equal to about 3.8ghz P4. So obviousley the PM is better.

Hey Dellguy, I don't think sd is arguing whether a P4 is better or more powerful than the Turion 64. I think sd's comments were focused more on the two laptops and their usefulness. Anyone following these threads understands that the P4 is bested by the Turion 64 when it comes to deployment in a laptop, and many of us understand why. I believe sd was just saying that even with the P4, the zd ain't dat bad of a laptop when compared to the dv, particularly when you take into consideration what tasks you have planned for it. Ain't no way the dv is better if you want to play games, and sd has shared his/her experiences with photoshop and quark.

I owned a zd for about 4 days before taking it back in exchange for the dv. Very happy I did the exchange and not looking back. However, I don't play games or use photoshop,... and what da hell is quark? <just kidding>.

I tell ya what, I happened to see my returned zd at Sam's displayed in their version of the 'open box' special. It was priced at $999. If it's there tomorrow, I'm gonna try my best to talk them down to $899. If they bite, I'm buyin'! For the very same lappy I paid $1399 for just short of 2 weeks ago? You bet! I know it's mine because of the markings on the box and the way the descriptive label is ripped. I did that when I first got it home.
