I just got my notebook back from HP with a new motherboard and when I tried booting it, it said I had an illegal copy of Vista and when I tried re-entering my Vista product key, it wouldn't accept it!!!

I can’t call it in since I’m DEAF. Is there anyway I can do this from my desktop as long as I know my notebook serial # & Vista product key?

BTW, just to show you the competence of HP employee's, I sent my notebook in for a new lid as they scratched my lid bad the week before when they put in a new motherboard then. Instead of a new lid, they put in another new motherboard, no lid and sent it back. With the first replacement motherboard, I didn't have to renew my Vista product key... this time I do... go figure! AND they scratched my lid even MORE!

Really not sure about the whole vista activation thing, but I thought as long as the motherboard was the same thing you wouldnt have a problem..

Anyways, try the Microsoft chat thing that they have thats how I got my new key.

You figure it out... the first time they changed the motherboard, I didn't have any problems, booted right up. This time around, I get a motherboard instead of a new lid and can't log on because of a Illegal Vista???

Anyway what and where can I find that Microsoft chat link?

Even if you contact Microsoft they will activate your Vista which will be temporary until you run a Recovery (Reinstall the OS) again. For a permanent fix you need to send the unit in again for service. (The MB needs to be retattoed) Only they can fix this issue. You can chat with HP technical support for setting up a repair, and also dont forget to mention about the scratched lid!

As i said earlier, Microsoft support can only help you activate Vista once, and if you reinstall the OS, the problem will occur again!

This is very odd. It should see that your HP BIOS is licensed for Vista and be happy. Unless they did something incredibly boneheaded like swap in a motherboard with a first-revision BIOS that predates Vista... check that. If so you just need to flash in the current version.

If you do have a remotely current BIOS reinstalling the system would work, either with the restore DVDs or with the clean install method that's stickied in this forum. That's overly dramatic for now. Get Microsoft to give you a key unless it really is an obsolete BIOS issue.

Doesn't do any good to fix the OS as it won't even power on now. It didn't the first time I tried turning it on, when I first opened the box, then I unplugged the AC cord, it turned on with battery. Then turned on about 3 more times. The last 4 times I tried to turn it on with or without AC, it won't fire up.

My wife stayed home from work today and spent 1 hour 37 minutes with a case worker in India, (yep, all service is handled over there, no USA #number) getting this mess straighten out. They're suppose to put in "another" motherboard, make sure Vista works and give me a new lid. He squawked about the new lid as that is not on warranty, but I told him that "their" tech guy is the one who scratched it all up and they were responsible. He gave in.

    So, round 3 folks!
