First of all I would like to say Hi and Thank You to everyone here! I've been lurking awhile and have found a lot of useful information that helped me decide on buying a Dv6 and its configuration. I ended up going with the following:
Operating system Windows: 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: 3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM Processor (2.3 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
Graphics card: NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GT 650M Graphics with 1GB GDDR5 memory
Memory: 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
Hard drive: 750GB 7200 rpm Hybrid Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
Hard Drive Acceleration Cache: NO mSSD Hard Drive Acceleration Cache
Primary battery: 9 cell Lithium Ion Battery edit
Display: 15.6-inch diagonal Full HD Anti-glare LED-backlit Display (1920 x 1080)
Primary optical drive: Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
Personalization: HP TrueVision HD Webcam
Networking: Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R)
Keyboard: Backlit Keyboard with numeric keypad
I ordered my computer on July 9th with the $100 off 4th of July Week Coupon. My order was declined on July 10th because they could not contact me to confirm it. I re-ordered on July 12th with the 33% off Coupon which ended up being about $80 less than with the $100 off Coupon, so I wasn't upset my first order was declined! Computer was shipped on July 18th and arrived on July 24th. I actually didn't plan on it coming so early so I had to have FedEx hold it for me until I could pick it up on July 30th. I think HP's estimated arrival time was August 1st so it arrived about a week early. Just thought I'd post this as I saw a few people asking how long it took to get a computer after ordering.
About the Computer:
The Good:
Everything looks and feels great. Screen is gorgeous, keyboard is comfortable, touchpad works well. Fingerprint reader is a nice feature and works very well. There was some Bloatware but Revo Uninstall took care of what I was comfortable removing very nicely. The most stressful thing I've run is Diablo 3 Maxed for a number of hours and temperatures run around 70ºC CPU and 65ºC GPU according to HWMonitor. At these temps the left hand area is decently warm, the fan is pushing out a good amount of hot air but is barely audible.
One thing to note, I used SpeedFan to measure temps at first and it was listing temps about 10ºC cooler. I then tried both HWMonitor and Real Temp and they gave the same readings as each other so I trust what they are saying rather than SpeedFan.
WiFi seems to have good pickup range. My previous computer was a Toshiba Satellite which had very good range and the Dv6 seems to match it. Now to explain how I am judging this. With my job I travel almost every week for about 8 months of the year with my job. Whether it was picking up wireless in airports or hotels, my Toshiba seemed to be about the best for picking up WiFi when compared to my co-workers various computers (maybe compared it to 10-15 other computers over the couple years I had it). I knew if the Dv6 was similar I'd be happy with it, which it seems to be.
The Bad:
All the build quality issues I read about my computer seems to have as well. Keyboard has a decent wave to it, screen bezel isn't absolutely tight along the bottom edge of the screen and seems to be getting a little worse with use, and the Blu-Ray Drive isn't perfectly aligned. The keyboard wave and Blu-Ray Drive don't bother me in any way, the screen does a little knowing it seems to have gotten a bit worse since it was first unboxed. Now along with the normal issues I read about I also have/had a few more. The "H" key initially was misaligned and wouldn't press down properly. At first I tried to remove it but I felt like I was going to break something and didn't know if these keys even come off like other keyboards I've had. I then just pressed down on it very hard and pressed it in the direction needed to center it and it seemed to snap into place. It's been fine ever since. Another issue I have is the light around the touchpad doesn't light up. Pressing Fn + Space doesn't do anything. I read a HP support thread about it saying to reinstall the touchpad driver, and as expected that didn't do anything. Probably a hardware issue. If anyone has any recommendations for the screen bezel issue or touchpad light I'd appreciate any help.
Other than build quality issues the only other bad thing I have to say is about the Beats Audio. I read about the volume leveling issue and man is it annoying. Ran the file listed in this thread and it seems to have solved the volume problem. Even with that fix though the sound quality just doesn't seem very good. I've tried playing around with the equalizer which makes a big difference but just can't get anything to sound as good as I would hope. If anyone has some equalizer settings to try I'd appreciate it.
In Conclusion:
All in all I am happy with my purchase. I like the computer a lot and the few issues I have certainly aren't deal breakers. Can't really beat it for an under $1000 computer (Total came to $968 before taxes.)
