Having had a only a Tosh for over 4 years I'd become accustomed to the way it used memory. Now with an HP nc6320 with 1gb (and another 1gb from Crucial on the way, couldn't quite justify 2gb price yet) I've noticed some considerable fluctuations.

With two main apps running Azureus and Maxthon (plus the background stuff) I've seen Available Memory go from 350meg to 150. Is there anything specific to HP or the latest processors that causes this sort of change. At those levels am I eating into VM?

    Cheers.

There's no difference in memory usage from computer brand to computer brand.

It relates to what you have on it (software wise), how much RAM, how much you have set for the paging file, etc.

Processors don't affect memory usage, either.

Computers themselves do not manage memory, thus an HP will not manage memory different than a Toshiba. What does manage memory is the operating system. I presume that the Toshiba ran WinXP and the new HP is running Vista. So that's the reason why memory usage is different. If they both ran the exact same configuration, then there would be no difference in usage.

The applications in the background and the one's that you have open cause this. It's nothing serious.Unless you do some heavy gaming or memory intensive applications, this laptop is more than enough for your needs.

    I carefully avoided Vista ;)

App wise there's a few more system processes running than the Tosh would but not that many.

I guess with another 1gb it will all be inconsequential but I'm still surprised about the amount that's available.
