Just ordered...
So I'm replacing an MSI GX640 that I bought new in 2010. She works, I can squeeze AAA games to play (barely), but the HD5850 is showing her age.
I poured over reviews on Amazon for Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and I entertained Eluktronics. I kept coming back to the Omen because across all models 90% of the reviews were positive and not so much on some of the others (especially MSI), which is sad because they had much better reviews back in the day.
The risk I'm taking is a like new sealed refurbish from HP. Fingers crossed.
Hopefully I can strip out the bloatware efficiently and be able to comfortablly play current games. I also may look into an Nvidia Shield to expand gaming to the living room (home is networked with Ethernet).
I guess my first question is do I need to focus on the drivers on the HP site or is there an issue just downloading the latest Nvidia drivers direct?
Thanks!

If you completely reinstall the device, install first the HP drivers (might contain customizations), but afterwards you can directly take the Nvidia ones. Geforce Experience will anyway run in a normal installation and only offer you Nvidias driver.
My new HP Omen 17 didn't have too much bloatware installed actually, so I kept the original installation.
Here's the thread about my device http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/hp-omen-17-kaby-lake-uhd-display.804313/ I was mostly concerned with the display and performance and am so far very happy
I had a ~7 year old Asus G73Jh (with AMD 5870m) which I replaced with the Omen. -
Good to hear the bloatware was not bad. Back in the day, my MSI had nothing out of the box which was impressive. I figured these days I'd be so lucky.
Thanks for the info! Sounds like we were in similar boats and made the same call. -
Confirmed bloatware was minimal, mostly just HP assistance type stuff. Funny, GeForce now felt more like bloatware than anything else. I have it disabled for now.
Little bit of screen bleed around top edges, perhaps why the previous owner returned it. However once you get a screen saver set and watch 4k video, you forget about it and the 4k video looked great.
Doom on ultra 4k running 40-50 fps wasn't too shabby either.
So far so good. Fingers crossed. -
I always buy my wife hp refrubs. Never had problems that wasn't our own doing. You should buy a hp warranty on it. I always do. I have the same laptop you do I think with a newer cpu. I got mine new but I had to send it back two times for heating problems.

Funny you should say that. I was on the phone for 2 hours today trying to buy an extended warranty because I was unsure about the one you just click and buy a-la-carte. Here >> http://store.hp.com/us/en/mdp/laptop-carepacks/envy-17--omen----spectre#!&tab=vao
It seems weird that they'd sell me a warranty online without asking any pertinent questions (like what's my serial number and date of purchase). It was ready to just let me check out.
One person said that one would not qualify on refurbished and I needed a more expensive one. I thought it seemed shady, so ended up getting transferred. Next person said they thought the one online would work and to "give it try".
I explained and I'd rather not float 600.00 waiting on refunds while HP has me trying different plans and wanted to get this figured out now. I got no where after two hours.
Frustrating. Not one spoke good English and sound quality was like chatting on walkie talkies.Last edited: Jun 15, 2017 -

I just recently bought the HP Omen 17 with rx580 and I love it. It needs an M.2 nvme ssd but other than that I love it. It is a beast of a laptop, so the 1070 going to be an awesome experience as well.
