Ok, so I am just now getting around to using my DV5t that I purchased back in January. The system is still configured *exactly* as shipped from the factory.

One of the first things I wanted to do was to test its ability to play DVDs, etc when I am on the road, so I hooked it up to a 32" LCD TV via an HDMI cable. The display was recognized just fine, and I configured dual view with the LCD TV as the second monitor.

When I dropped a DVD in and fired up Windows Media Player and HP Quick Play, I realized that I needed to tell it to use the speakers on the TV instead of the internal speakers.

But when I went into the Sound control panel to make the change, the device "NVIDIA HDMI Output - NVIDIA HDMI Audio" showed as 'Not Plugged In' and the device only appeared when "show disconnected devices" was checked.

I spent two hours with HP Support Chat across two different sessions. Besides being painfully slow, they were completely useless and clueless and could only offer such things as "disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable" and 'select a different output device and now you can select HDMI' (nope, sorry)

So Bloody Frustrating. So I am hoping that someone here might know the solution to my problem or at least have some ideas to try to enable Audio out over HDMI.

    Suggestions anyone?

The specs for my DV5t Laptop (CTO) are:

    - Vista Home Premium SP11 (64-bit)
    - P8400 (2.26 GHz) CPU
    - WSXGA+ Display (1680 x 1050)
    - 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - Webcam Only
    - Wireless-N w/ Bluetooth
    - SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support
    - HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner

NVIDIA HDMI Audio Driver version 1.0.0.23

NVidia Display Driver version 7.15.11.7586 (forceware 175.86)

I've had similar problems when using pre-HDMI 1.3 cables. Make sure your HDMI cable is revision 1.3 or newer.

i had the same issue with my HP Pavilion dv7-1245dx. i haven't tried solving the issue. but my HDMI cable is version 1.3..... other than plugging the computer to to TV via HDMI cable and seeing that there was no audio, i haven't looked in the hardware control panel or anything like that. so yeah any easy solution would be greatly appreciated
    thanks!

Thanks. I checked and the cable I am using is HDMI rev 1.3. *sigh*. I'm putting this issue on the back burner for now, as I have switch out the HDD and installed XP. Next step when I get back home is to also install Vista (on a separate partition).

    Hmm...

Does HP even support audio over HDMI? Some laptops don't despite protocol on technology.

Their ATI GPU notebooks do. Mine does at least. Don't know about NVIDIA.

Do you have the TV input set to HDMI? The computer may not see the TV if the TV is on the wrong input.

I have never gotten audio to work over HDMI either. I have the 9600m GT as well, so it could possibly be an NVIDIA thing? Kinda defeats the purpose of an HDMI port though.

Not sure what the problem is. Let me know if you figure it out.

I have a DV5t and 90% of the time the audio works. I usually watch huhu programs. If I change something, the audio usually stops. I have to reboot and start over to get the audio to work again. Seems to be a problem with this computer. I have not upgraded my drivers.

Mine works (DV9500T) with the 8600m, using PowerDVD 8 Ultra. Often You have to set the software to use it (not just set the default audio out for the machine).

    Hi JoeCHecht,
I have the same laptop than you and follow your advice of upgrading.
I am really happy with the optiarc 5500, thank you.
But I have the no audio problem over HDMI.
Did you change some settings on PowerDVD 8 Ultra? May I ask you what?
Did you upgrade any driver besides setting the software correctly?
    Thank you, Rodrigo.

I had an Nvidia 9200m and a ATI HD3650 and they both had options to set the audio to hdmi in the audio playback properties, and they both worked fine on my TV.

    Works here.

I think I am running the latest update for PowerDVD Ultra (2705?).

Default playback for the laptop is digitial output.

PowerDVD is configured for SDF output.

First, the only number that matters on your system is the Product # on the Service label underneath it. Without that, knowing your exact system configuration is just a guess, and any solutions posted here are just guesses and conjecture.

Second, for anyone who owns an HP notebook, HP usually send out a nifty notebook with their systems. It does not contain BS - it has most information required on how to do things like setting up HDMI audio and many other tasks.

The first thing you should have done after unboxing was:

    1. Register the system on the HP site
    2. Used your Product # to go to your system's Support page
    3. Updated the BIOS and all drivers from that page
    4. Completed any Windows updates that were available.

Without doing that and establishing the optimum baseline configuration for your system, you can't determine if there's a hardware or software issue at work here.

You can use the HP Update utility on your system, or follow the steps here:

    1. Get the Product # from the label (PRODUCT, NOT MODEL). It usually ends with an #ABA or something similar. It will a series of letters and numbers. It is NOT Dv5 whatever.
    2. Go to this link at HP: HP SUPPORT AND DRIVERS
    3. Enter your PN into the field, click on Software and Driver downloads, then the double arrows to the right. This will take you to the support page for your exact system configuration.
    4. Go through the Drivers and update all the ones that are old. Use the Device Manager to verify the driver versions. Make sure you get the BIOS update as well.

After you've done all that, then go to your Sound panel, find the Digital Output Device (the DOD is what you need to set - if it's separate than NVIDIA HDMI, then select it anyway). Once you select it, set it to Default. It should say HDMI or SPDIF, depending on the driver version and your installed audio. It makes no difference.

If after that you still have no audio, or it's not allowing you to route the audio over the HDMI, then go to your Device Manager, right click on the GPU and select Uninstall, then reboot to let it reinstall. Same for the Audio.

If you still don't have anything, go back to your support page, click on Solve a Problem, then Sound/Mic and go through the procedures there.

You can also go to HP Services Media Library and plug in your system to bring up the various demos on how to setup different functions. You can see if it's different from what you're seeing.
